When most people think of neon, they think of diners, bars, and arcades of the past. Science Fiction movies also come to mind. The thing is, neon is making a comeback! This artistic medium creates a striking image in people’s minds, and it especially stands out in photos and videos. For these reasons, it’s time to take a blast from the past and start using neon in our event design again.
The cool thing about neon is that it can convey several different tones and emotions. When paired with minimalism and solid colors, it will feel contemporary. Mixing it with other edgy artwork and bright colors will give it an urban/retro feel, while pairing it with an elegant design element such as a chandelier or candlesticks will bring about a cosmopolitan feeling. Lastly, take a page out of Blade Runner or Tron for a futuristic look. Neon can work in any setting and will add something unique to your event.
There are a few famed neon artists in the contemporary art arena: Jung Lee, Dan Flavin, and Robert Montgomery. Korean artist Jung Lee mixes nature with neon sentences, creating Instagram-worthy installations in forests, fields, and lakes. Scottish Robert Montgomery does something similar but utilizes buildings and urban settings. American Dan Flavin used solitary neon lines and shapes in empty rooms to make an impression. Planners can get design ideas by researching these artists’ work.
One of the best things about neon is that it’s totally photo-worthy. Bright colors, cool shapes, simple words that are lit up and made magnificent… Using neon at your meeting or event will enchant attendees, remaining in the forefront of their minds long after they’ve left. During the event, guests won’t be able to stop taking pictures and posting them to social media, giving your event even greater reach and impact. And luckily, NH Hotel Group is always delighted when it comes to helping you plan and design the use of neon for any occasion.
