When it comes to event decorations, every event planner has a need to be inspired, to come up with new ideas to meet the visual requirements of the client. This can be to surprise attendees with a unique or unusual backdrop or to give an impression of class, style, formality and so much more. However, we know that hidden inside every planner is a décor default setting, one that, if there was just one blank event canvas, he or she would adopt. Here are five such defaults demonstrated through our character creations…
Techie Thomas is always looking for the technological solution to any situation, and the higher the spec the better. The client wants whiteboards in the meeting room, Thomas proposes digital smart boards. The client asks for a remote speaker to dial in, Thomas goes a few steps further for a 3D hologram to appear on stage instead. He absolutely loves gadgets and will look at the best ways to bring in modern devices to enhance the event. Audience engagement is maximized through gamification with guests playing live via their mobiles and tablets linking to augmented reality décor as they move between rooms. Huge LED screens greet attendees and give them all the information, and at times entertainment, they need when they need it. The ‘wow’ factor is the be all and end all for Thomas. Here’s hoping there’s no power cut!
As guests arrive at the venue, beautifully arranged flower displays welcome them at the entrance. This is a clear sign that Green Gretna has planned today’s event decorations. She is a very down to earth type of planner – literally! Sustainable strategy is what gets her excited which can be seen by the use of plants throughout the rooms as well as a clear selection of signposting that usher attendees towards the multiple recycling disposal units laid on. Lighting is tastefully set up using the most efficient bulbs, and LED screens instead of large paper posters can get all the required info across without the obvious waste. Gretna challenges herself to get as low a carbon footprint as possible with the ultimate goal of closing down her event with a ‘net positive’.
The person who envisaged how each and every Apple store looks is an idol of Minimalist Mike. His idea of a perfect venue room is clutter less, with a perception, at least, of clear space meaning the presentations and speakers get all the focus. White is a favorite color of his to achieve this and translucent furniture adds to a sense of simplicity and openness. Mike keeps the mix of colors in the room to a minimum – tones often coming from spot lighting – while he also aims to have huge wall areas free of multiple hanging pieces of art, instead a select few that complement the zone. Mike takes his default setting to new heights by giving out dress code guidance to guests for an evening get-together. After all, why let the people element disrupt the purity of the concept!
Second-hand clothes, themed decades of the past, classic music to bring it all together. These are the event décor traits of Nostalgic Nora. Why dress up the venue with ideas from today when there is so much fun to be had from times gone by? This is the question she asks herself before each new project, which inspires her reminiscence. Early arcade games like Pac-man, or middle of last century vintage cars, are the type of large items that Nora would turn to as fillers for a huge hotel foyer and old polaroid cameras would be the type of item forming part of the table-top décor bringing the pre-digital world flashing back. Forget modernity, Nora will take her attendees on a trip to the ‘Good Old Days’, whenever they were.
Down with the millennials, she keeps it 100, and her events decorations are always lit. Trendy Tracey not only knows what the slang phrases doing the rounds are, she also lives them through her events. If the latest technology is facial recognition for interactive gameplay then you can be assured that Tracey has it included in the visual décor. If there’s a new material being used for table centerpieces, then she’ll be all over it. If it’s on-trend, it’s on her radar. In recent months she’s been incorporating multi-sensory experiences to wow her guests as they walk through the rooms; developing event branding in exclusive and unusual styles; and combing the globe for unique venues that match her enthusiasm for ‘the look’. To aid her inspiration, Tracey regularly meets up with Techie Thomas and Green Gretna to share ideas!
