Let us start by opening up the Merriam-Webster dictionary and turning to the letter ‘E’…
Experience (noun)
ex·pe·ri·ence | \ ik-ˈspir-ē-ən(t)s
It’s not a difficult word, and indeed it’s a rather common one. It was calculated by the Corpus of Contemporary American English to be the 421st most used word and even works extremely well as a verb. So, what makes it such an appealing and effective player in our language today?
Taking its first definition above, experience is all those elements of knowledge and awareness that you have picked up over the years. Normally, they say, the older you get the more experience you will have; however, this can also depend on the hours you have invested in a particular area or the exposure you have had to it. You may know about swimming with sharks, but you’ll never comprehend what it really feels like until you’ve spent time in the water with them. You may have been on holiday several times to the same country, but you can’t fully appreciate what it’s like to live there and be immersed in its people, its customs and its culture. Experience provides a depth of understanding, hence why it is so highly valued by new employers.
Moving on to the second meaning, here we are looking at the effect on people. An enchanting piece of music, a mesmerising sunset, a loving relationship, a cup final victory, a chance encounter, an exhilarating adventure, a tear-jerking wedding… These experiences are unlikely to ever be forgotten. They live on long after the moment and are etched in our minds for the rest of ours lives. In fact, it is your experiences that make your life.
By now, if not from the title alone, you will have captured the essence of how both definitions of experience apply to event planning. The skills you have picked up over the years – not only those directly from working in the industry – will all be crucial in determining what you can offer to the planning process and on the day itself. And with all that knowledge, you are now able to provide a rewarding time for your attendees to enjoy, one that proves fulfilling and productive.
Your experience, along with that of your expert support team, allows you to create the most memorable of experiences for others. Dig deep and deliver.
