One of the biggest mistakes a M&E planner can do is try to incorporate too many styles into their event. Choose 2 themes and always use elements that support or are related to these themes. For example, combine a rustic-feeling room (characterized by wood paneling or stone walls) with bright, modern furniture. Sometimes it’s easier to focus on the feel of the furniture or the mood of the room, instead of focusing on colors.
The easiest way to mix different styles is by using contrast. You want to make sure your best pieces stand out. Imagine you have a big, retro, red sofa as the focal point of the room. The other design elements should either contrast with that sofa or complement it in a way that doesn’t distract attention. There has to be a balance to the design, otherwise it will simply look messy instead of coordinated.
