It was a tumultuous time between 1601-1700, complete with major wars, dynasty revolutions, life-changing inventions, and momentous discoveries. The 17th century is recognized as a rather transitional period where we saw the end of the Renaissance and the start of the Enlightenment periods. Dramatic and ornate Baroque art and music filled these hundred years while a scientific revolution took place in Europe. A busy period in history, and one that can provide thematic inspiration for event planners looking to step back in time.
Picture those long clothed tables laid out for royal Parisian guests visiting a stately châteaux or Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles. Lush settings for the most elegant of banquets complemented with opulent metallic cutlery, tall slim candles, and plush upholstery in the richest of colors. The sparkling chandeliers above give that additional sophistication and then there are the various statues and busts that can line any area for the ultimate in grandeur status.
Domestic decoration changed through the century as new materials arrived in Europe from around the globe. Prosperity rose, craftsmen became more ambitious, and the Italian Renaissance grew in its influence on design. Oak paneling with fabrics to lighten the mood became commonplace in Elizabethan rooms, for example, and clear, embellished carvings brought French artistry to other countries as increased travel promoted shared concepts. Architectural advancements and the popularization of the Baroque style internationally transformed how people saw, and felt, about furniture, ornaments, and even buildings, always with the intention to impress.
It was a time of Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Rubens and Velázquez, so the idea of surrounding your attendees with some of the greatest masterpieces of the time is likely to catch the eye, and potentially open up discussion. The year 1616 saw William Shakespeare exit this world so maybe a nod in his direction with a menu or presentation style would be an appropriate touch, and around the middle of the century the Taj Mahal was built in India giving the option to use this famous imagery where appropriate. Creativity abounds too from anything related to Isaac Newton, a key player back then.
Feeling inspired by this? If so, there is one particular venue we can recommend that will provide you with the perfect setting. Our NH Collection Torino Piazza Carlina hotel has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. It lies in the heart of the northern Italian city of Turin meaning your guests are in close proximity to the Royal Palace, the Teatro Carignano and the Palazzo Madama, all offering their own glimpses back to this time. The hotel, of course, gives a modern feel to its historic roots, including geothermal heating, handcrafted furniture, a gymnasium and rooftop terraces. A wide range of stylish rooms ensures a comfortable stay while spacious, all-purpose meeting areas and a team of event experts guarantee a professional result.
The local region can also add to your attendees’ experience. Take them on a trip to the magnificent Palace of Venaria, for example, and let them gaze in wonder of what it must have been like to live there for the past 400 years or so. The detail of the interior has been immaculately restored, while the castle ground and the views across the mountains make for a truly memorable occasion.
Draw on your inner time traveler and send your attendees on a voyage back to the 17th century. There’s so much for them to admire while dealing with the work in hand.
