Effort for event success - NH Meetings Blog

There are people that enjoy success thanks to some luck. Unfortunately for them, luck tends not to be something you can rely on for too long. Effort on the other hand is fully reliable, and is a sure fire attribute of a constantly successful event planner. Yes, there are a number of other important elements to their character, but applying a good work ethic to the perceived magic will be what makes it stand out from the rest.

So, what is effort? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary it is, in the context we are discussing, the ‘conscious exertion of power or hard work’ and ‘ the total work done to achieve a particular end.’ In our normal working lives we do and see this all the time.

That friend who makes it to the gym every morning before going to the office. Your nephew who is studying instead of playing to make sure he gets the qualifications he wants. The colleague who is maintaining a healthy diet focused on reaching a desired shape before the summer holidays. A patient following a daily plan to recover from an illness. All of these people are determined and their efforts have one important thing in common: a final goal. Whether it’s fitness, health, career, happiness or whatever else, aiming for a particular objective is often the key to effective effort. Instant gratification may be a modern desire, but a foundation of effort is what will prove successful and most fulfilling.

When setting out the plans for a new event you will line up a number of specific objectives that will define its success. Striving to achieve them is the effort that you will use. That effort will manifest itself through a number of your skills: creativity, organization, negotiation, delegation, communication… and will be maintained throughout the life of the project. Obstacles will undoubtedly be thrown into your path, questions about the choices you make will be raised, and sometimes you’ll feel completely overwhelmed. But your determination will mean that each day you wake up and get take the next steps towards reaching the end goals.

Planning a meeting or event is rarely an easy task, however, as any professional that has delivered a successful one can contest, the effort is certainly worth it.
