Oktoberfest, the beer’s festival
The Oktoberfest is a celebration held between the months of September and October in the Bavarian city of Munich since 1810. It is the largest festival in Germany and one of the largest in the world with an average of 6 million visitors every year. The first Oktoberfest was held from October the 12th to October 17th in 1810 to celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Altenburg.
It lasts two weeks, beginning the first Saturday after September the 15th. Held in the field known as Theresienwiese (Therese Meadow) near the city center of Munich and the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) is really colorful and very fun!
Many of the festival celebrations take place in the tents set up on the Theresienwiese and, although the entrance to the tent is free, it is possible to reserve seats in advance. If you want to enjoy the festival to the fullest try to be on time. If we are late we are risking the reservation and the tents might be already full. And… why is that so important? Because you are only served beer if you have got a seat!
Drinking beer is not the only thing you can do in this festival. If you are food fan you can also taste delicious specialities. However, the only place where you will find a truly Bavarian specialty is at the Fischer-Vroni tent. The marinated kebabs cooked over charcoal and the famous Steckerlfisch (smoked mackerel) are their speciality but they have many tasty fish dishes. And, surprisingly, it does not smell very fishy there! This is one of the smallest tents but with its 2,700 seats you sure will have a good time.
Although only in Munich you can enjoy the original and biggest Oktoberfest, it is widely celebrated all around the world. Some of the most important celebrations are held in many cities all around the globe such as Kitchener in Canada, Cincinati in United States or Malloco in Chile.
