NH Hotel Group participates in an ambitious program to develop and promote practices that care for the Planet. Innovation and the Company’s sustainability plans ensure the well-being and satisfaction of our most demanding clients.

NH Hotels set up a specific sustainability criteria that green hotels must follow. All hotels participate in optimizing the use of resources and minimizing consumption of damaging substances. Monthly controls of carbon footprint as well as trying to control energy and water consumption per hotel.

We also promote locally sourced food and eco-labelling.

The Group has a system of waste separation at the point of origin in all its hotels to permit recycling. In 2021, NH has implemented a monitoring system for hazardous waste.

To minimize the impact of food waste, the green hotels apply processes, technical data sheets and preparation standards in the production chain. NH is working in alliance with Too Good To Go to combat food wastage.

These initiatives have been recognized in our by multiple certification standards such as ISO, GreenKey, and qualified as sustainable by Bioscore, Green Stay by HRS and Booking.

All NH Hotels in Southern Europe, Austria, The Netherlands and Luxembourg use electricity that comes from renewable sources, meaning 62% of our portfolio.

During 2021, projects that improve energy efficiency have been implemented, worth 1.58 million euros. There has been changes in equipment, where the replacement involves greater efficiency. Additionally, we fed a constant flow of investments related to control of installations such as building energy management systems or improvements on lighting. Actions have been taken on building facades with improvements in the envelope and insulation.

The reduction of Greenhouse Emissions is also a top priority for NH green Hotels worldwide. Reduction goals have been established in the medium and long term to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the means implemented to that end.

The Group works with Aqueduct, a World Resources Institute tool that identifies the areas with the highest risk of water stress worldwide and monitors the properties we operate in to ensure preventive adoption measures.

Global Sustainable Experiences

The Group has been focalizing efforts in digitalization, trying to reduce further avoidable tree logging. To nurture this purpose, NH Hotels has created the FASTPASS which main purpose is to offer guests the possibility of using three innovative services: Online Check-in, Choose Your Room and Online Check-out. Hence, reducing the use of paper and giving our guests the possibility of carrying out both interactions from their smartphone.

In line with our digitalization strategy, NH Hotel Group presents Smart Tablet in Reception, a new proposal that reduces physical interaction and waiting times at hotel reception, improving the guest’s experience by digitalizing all the phases of check-in and check-out processes.

A new line of amenities has been introduced for all our brands which showcases the Company’s commitment to accelerate Circular Economy. This project has enabled us to reach the following milestones: 1. The elimination of 14 million bottles of plastic per year, which represents a saving of 45 metric tons of plastic per year, a reduction of 40% in metric tons of plastic and 364 metric tons of CO2 not emitted. The new amenities are made with biodegradable materials, 100% recycled paper and natural recyclable cardboard 2. The elimination of 5 million bars of soap, representing a reduction of 70 metric tons of soap. 3. Eco-label certified products, what guarantees that the product that goes to the sea does not harm the environment 4. Use of sustainable materials, as this new amenities are paraben, silicon & alcohol free, not tested on animals and 100% natural actives.

Currently there are more than 26 hotels that offer bicycle hire services, as well as charging points for electric cars installed in 48 eco hotels like in the NH Collection Barcelona Constanza in Spain or the NH Geneva Airport in Switzerland. NH Hotel Group has created an alliance with Volvo and Enel and has installed its first charging totem for electric vehicles next to the NH Plaza Santiago hotel in Chile.

Multiple NH Hotel Group hotels worldwide have installed urban vegetable gardens in its premises such as the NH Milano Congress Center or the NH Collection Royal Medellín.

Innovative Sustainable Measures

We have implemented a series of innovative sustainable measures that have made it possible to improve our carbon footprint: cutting CO2 emissions, obtaining savings in water and energy as well as recycling waste.

We plan to continue our growth responsibly and hope to be leaders of a sustainable development in the tourism industry, doing our bit in order for all of us to wake up to a better world.

CORK2CORK Sustainability Program

We have been known for our environmental focus for years. For this reason, each time we uncork a bottle in one of our 77 green hotels in Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium or Holland we collect the corks to be recycled and reused.

In our CORK2CORK sustainability program, the corks we collect, instead of being thrown away, are given a new use. For example, the production of 8,000 m2 of pavement which is equal to the remodelling or construction of more than 300 rooms.

We have focused on reducing CO2 emissions, water and energy consumption, and waste reduction… and we will continue to do this!
