What to see in Düsseldorf?

We’ve already mentioned Altstadt, the city’s old town and its main cultural area. Whether you’re looking to explore its historic buildings (like the Renaissance style Town Hall), indulge in Düsseldorf’s culinary culture (you’ll find many bars and pubs serving the traditional altbier), or visit one of its many museums—Altstadt is the place to be.

You also won’t want to miss Königsallee, the city’s most stylish street. With its wide array of exclusive stores, this is one of Germany’s main shopping areas. The street runs for around one kilometer, and it also makes for a lovely scenic stroll, thanks to the canal in its center and the plane trees along it.

The gorgeous Rhine river is one of the city’s most emblematic sights. You can go on a stroll along its lovely promenade (known as the Rheinuferpromenade) where you’ll also find plenty of shops, cafés, and restaurants. Or you can also book a cruise tour of the Rhine and enjoy the incredible views.

Explore the old neighborhood of Kaiserswerth, a picturesque area where you’ll find a host of gorgeous Baroque buildings from the 18th and 17th centuries. Additionally, you’ll also find plenty of great restaurants in this area along with art galleries like the Kaiserswerth Art Archive

On the other hand, the modern Medienhafen (the former Rhine port), will dazzle you with its highly original buildings such as those in the Neuer Zollhof complex, created by the brilliant architect Frank Gehry

The massive Museum Kunstpalast (Museum of Art) is one of Düsseldorf’s best museums. Located in front of the Rhine, the museum has an impressively extensive collection of art that spans from Roman times until modernity. One of its most remarkable pieces is Peter Paul Reuben’s Venus and Adonis from 1609.

What to eat in Düsseldorf?

Düsseldorf boasts of an exciting gastronomic culture, which includes several traditional dishes that you can try during your stay. At the top of the list, we have Rheinischer Sauerbraten, a delicious roast prepared from meat (usually beef but it can also be made with pork, venison, or mutton) that has been marinated in vinegar and spices. Also try Himmel und Äd, which literally translates to “heaven and earth” and consists of black pudding accompanied with stewed apples and mashed potatoes.

It wouldn’t be right to talk about Düsseldorf’s culinary culture without mentioning the city’s beer of choice: Altbier. This copper-colored beer is usually made around the city and can be easily found at its many restaurants and bars. Make sure not to leave Düsseldorf without trying it.

Hausbrauerei Zum Schlussel is a great spot in Altstadt where to try both Sauerbraten and Altbier, among other choices. Other restaurants where you can try local dishes include Uerige and Staudi’s, which often gives modern takes on classic dishes.

How to arrive in Düsseldorf?

The city receives international visitors at the Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), which is located around 8 kilometers north of the city center. You can reach the city center from the airport by train as well as by several buses. The airport is also connected to the A44 motorway, which reaches the city center and other nearby destinations.

You can also arrive in Düsseldorf by train from elsewhere in Germany and some European destinations at the Central Station and Airport Station.

How to get around in Düsseldorf?

Walking and cycling are efficient ways of getting around Altstadt and exploring its attractions. Düsseldorf also has an efficient public transport system that makes it a breeze to reach other areas of the city. It includes trams, buses, the U-bahn (the metro), and the S-bahn (regional trains). You have the choice between single-ride tickets and day tickets for using the public transport.

While driving is generally not necessary for getting around the city, it would be useful to have a car on hand if you’re planning on visiting areas outside Düsseldorf. Car rental services are available in the city, and you’ll also find parking options including parking garages.
