What to see in Florence?

The Galeria Uffizi is one of the most important art museums in the world. The venue itself, located in the historic center of Florence, is an architectural marvel built in the 16th century. However, the true attraction is the museum’s priceless collection of artworks, especially those of the Italian Renaissance, which include Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus.

Perhaps the most emblematic landmark in Florence is the Duomo di Forenze, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower. It was completed in 1436 and continues to be a major tourist attraction thanks to its gorgeous architecture, which displays multiple styles.

Head to the Piazzale Michelangelo, one of the most picturesque squares in Florence, and don’t miss out on the charm of the Palazzo Vecchio, the city’s town hall, or the bronze copy of Michelangelo’s famed sculpture of David.

Discover one of the most important displays of Gothic architecture with a visit to the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, a church whose construction began in the 13th century. It has a beautiful marble façade along with a vast interior with many historic works of art.

A trip to Florence wouldn’t be complete without browsing through the San Lorenzo Market. A great activity for the whole family, a visit to the market will take you through a wide display of fresh food items, leather goods, and assorted souvenirs. It’s a great place to sample many of Florence’s specialty dishes.

Go on a walk along the Arno River, one of Italy’s most well-known rivers, and appreciate the beautiful sights of the city, including the famous Ponte Vecchio, along with the many restaurants, cafes, and shops that line it.

Where to eat in Florence?

Visiting Florence presents you with the perfect opportunity to try the amazing Tuscan cuisine: simple yet extremely satisfying and featuring plenty of local produce, grilled meats, beans, and, of course, gelato.

Some of the most iconic dishes include bistecca alla Fiorentina, a very thick aged steak grilled on a live charcoal flame, and the fagioli all'uccelletto, a simple bean dish with garlic and olive oil, very popular as a side.

Florence is full of amazing restaurants where you can try the traditional fare. You cannot go wrong with Trattoria Da Burde, a family-run restaurant with proven recipes, or Regina Bistecca, where the bistecca alla Fiorentina reigns supreme. To try some authentic gelato, try Vivoli Gelato, which has been in business since 1930.

How to arrive in Florence?

The Florence Airport (FLR), formally known as the Amerigo Vespucci Airport, receives most of the international visitors into Florence. You can easily reach the city center from the airport through line T1 of the tramway (to the central Santa Maria Novella train station), bus, or taxi.

Florence Airport is only about 4 kilometers from the city center. It’s very easy to drive from the airport to the city center thanks to the Viale Alessandro Guidoni motorway.

Pisa International Airport (PSA) can serve as an alternative. It’s located around 100 kilometers away from Florence, but it’s also directly connected to the Santa Maria Novella train station in the Florence city center.

How to get around in Florence?

The best way to explore Florence is by walking. Its historic center is fairly small: you can go on a 30-minute walk through Florence and pass by many of the city’s main landmarks. The narrow streets, magnificent architecture, and small shops and restaurants of Florence make it a real treat to discover on foot.

The buses are also very convenient, providing a simple way of reaching almost any destination in the city. Almost 100 bus lines service the city of Florence. Three tram lines also run through the city, however, none of them pass through the city center. This mode of transport is more suitable for longer trips, such as going from the airport to the city center.

Visiting with a car is not really necessary, but you can choose to do so, particularly if you’d also like to get to destinations outside of Florence. Keep in mind, however, that much of Florence’s city center is off-limits without a special permit, with some areas marked as “ZTL” (Limited Traffic Zone). Parking lots are available, including outside the “ZTL” areas.

Book your room online with NH Hotel Group and stay at some of the best hotels in Florence for incredible prices. Discover the many charms of this historic city from the best accommodations.
