Where to stay in London?

London is a very large city, and its many attractions are spread throughout it. This means that regardless of where you book your accommodation in London, you won’t be close to every single point of interest in the city. That being said, we can highlight several suitable areas for first-time visitors, such as the Mayfair neighborhood for sightseeing, Covent Garden for its central location, or Shoreditch for its abundance of restaurants and shops and its vibrant nightlife.

You won’t want to miss the London Eye, a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames and one of the city’s most emblematic sights. With a length of 135 meters, the London Eye is one of the highest viewing points in London and offers some of the most incredible views over the city.

London is a city of many great museums and Tate Modern stands out amongst them. It’s one of the largest museums of modern art in the entire world and one of the most visited in Britain. What’s more, it’s permanent collection—which exhibits works by the likes of Andy Warhol and Matisse—is free to visit.

The Big Ben (also known as the Great Clock of Westminster) is one of London’s most prominent cultural symbols and has been listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. A trip to London just wouldn’t be complete without a visit to this stunning neo-Gothic clock tower.

Buckingham Palace, which served as Queen Elizabeth II’s residence in London, is one of the city’s architectural landmarks and offers a glimpse into the country’s royal life. During selected dates, mostly during the summer, visitors can tour certain rooms in the palace’s magnificent interior.

Located in the city’s Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery is one of the most impressive museums you’ll ever visit. Its collection features over 2,300 paintings, which go as far back as the 13th century. Just like the Tate Modern’s, the National Gallery’s main collection is free to visit

Walk through Borough Market, a large marketplace which dates to at least the 12th century. Here you’ll find many different goods on sale, street-food vendors, as well as different classes taking place. The market is often very lively and will offer you the chance to try a variety of local goods.

What to eat in London?

London’s gastronomy is wide-ranging. Thanks to the city’s multicultural nature, dishes from many different ethnicities are part of London’s daily life. However, there are certain specialties that we can highlight as quintessentially British and London staples.

Fish & chips, for instance, consisting of deep-fried cod (or sometimes hake or haddock) along with fries, is one of London’s most emblematic dishes. You’ll also want to try an English breakfast complete with bacon, fried eggs, baked beans, and black pudding as well as a Sunday roast, which includes several different roasted meats. Indian food and Middle Eastern food are also widely available and representative of London.

While the great restaurants in London are so many to even begin to mention, spots like Rules, G Kelly, and Moro stand out as particularly characteristic of London’s culinary culture.

How to arrive in London?

London is a major international destination and has the busiest city airspace in the world. The city’s served by several airports with the two main ones being Heathrow Airport (LHR)—one of the busiest in the world in terms of international traffic—and Gatwick Airport (LGW), which also handles flights to and from many international destinations.

Regardless of which of these two airports you arrive at in London, you don’t have to worry about reaching the city center. There are multiple transport options available at either one, including trains, buses, coaches, car rentals, and taxis.

How to get around in London?

London features a very extensive public transport system. It includes the London Underground (a large underground rail network also known as “the Tube”), which is the most convenient way of reaching and getting around central London. Other public transport options include the London Buses, the London Trams, and the London Overground suburban rail network.

Additionally, cycling is a popular mode of transport in London. You can make use of the city’s public bicycle hire scheme, Santander cycles, to conveniently rent a bike and explore the city.

While driving is not as convenient as using the public transport in London—due to congestion and limited parking—several car rental services are available in the city. You should keep some things in mind if you’re going to drive, however. There’s a congestion charge for vehicles driving in central London at certain times as well as low emission zones. There are many car parking companies in the city, including NCP (National Car Parks).
