Budapest

The capital city of the Tuscany region of Italy, Florence is incredibly charming no matter when you visit. The city’s homely cuisine along with its Renaissance architecture and art, including museums like the Uffizi Gallery and the Palazzo Pitti, continues to attract millions of visitors every year. Florence’s entire Historic Centre has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

However, Florence is particularly lovely in the fall. Furthermore, during this time the Noche de Finaos is celebrated, a Halloween-like Canarian custom. As part of this recently-recovered tradition, children gather dried fruits and sweets from house to house and listen to stories from the oldest woman in their family.

The agreeable weather allows for visits to the Castillo de la Luz, the incomparable Las Canteras Beach (both in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), and to Mount Teide in Tenerife, a 3,700-meter-high volcano.

Vienna

Visit Vienna in October to enjoy the lovely fall weather—the average daily high and low temperatures are of 15ºC and 9ºC—along with some interesting events. Austria’s Long Night of Museums, where the city’s most important museums open until late with one ticket giving you entrance to over 100 of them, takes place every year on the first Saturday of October. The Vienna International Film Festival, one of Europe’s top film festivals, also happens in October.

Additionally, Vienna has plenty of architectural sights that are even more picturesque in the fall like the baroque marvel of the Belvedere Palace and The Hofburg palace, which covers 59 acres and includes many attractions. Vienna is also a fantastic family destination thanks to the Vienna Zoo and the Prater, a large natural park with theme park rides.

Rome

Rome is a city that needs no introduction. It is a perfect city to visit in October thanks to its mild daytime temperatures and its cool nights—with an average daily low temperature of 12ºC and an average daily high of 22ºC--as well as its beautiful sunsets. Also, two important events are celebrated throughout the month: the EurHop! beer festival and the Rome Film Fest, one of the world’s biggest film festivals.

When it comes to the marvels offered year-round by the Italian capital, the list goes on and on. The Coliseum, the Roman Forum, and the Palatine Hill are known by all but continue to impress, as do locations like the Trastevere neighborhood and the Piazza di Spagna. Very close to Rome, in Vatican City, you’ll find the St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, to complete an unforgettable trip.

Zaragoza

Zaragoza is a charming city—and one of Spain’s oldest—with plenty of typical pubs and restaurants, historic monuments, and museums. Visit in October to enjoy the lovely weather (averaging a daily high temperature of 21ºC with plenty of sunshine) and to witness the Fiestas del Pilar, one of the city’s most important festivities displaying a wide range of colorful celebrations.

The capital of the Aragon region offers many more attractions. You can take the Roman Route to glimpse into Zaragoza’s Roman past or witness some of the stunning Baroque architecture present in the city, like the Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar. You can also visit many interesting museums, including the Museo Goya and its impressive collection of paintings by Francisco de Goya.

The best places to travel in October as a couple

The Canary Islands have plenty of spots suitable for a coastal romantic getaway. While the large summer crowds have decreased in many destinations in the Canary Islands, allowing for a more intimate vacation with your partner, the weather is still plenty warm enough to go for a swim (average daily high and low temperatures of 26ºC and 20º).

Consider Venice, Italy as well, where you can go on a gondola ride for two or enjoy a nice romantic meal at one of the many fine restaurants available in the city.

What are the best places to go in October with kids?

As we have mentioned earlier, Vienna does not only feature plenty of leisure options for parents, but kids are sure to have a grand time as well. The Vienna Zoo, the Prater amusement park, the ZOOM Children’s Museum and the Haus des Meeres public aquarium are some of the attractions that make Vienna one of the best destinations where to travel in October with kids.

London, with many of the world´s greatest museums, is also a fantastic choice for a family vacation. The abundance of kid-friendly museums—including the London Transport Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum—makes London one of the best places to go in October with kids.

The best place to ski in October

Snow is not the same everywhere. Skiing at the end of the season, between September and October, is one of the options that come with the snow lovers who can’t wait for the start of the season in Spain. And the best place to do it is Argentina. 

Catedral and Bariloche are the most internationally renowned for skiing places, but Argentina has 18 destinations to enjoy winter sports, most of them are located in Patagonia, in the farthest corner of the American continent where you can also enjoy glaciers and the end of the Andes. The variety of ski slopes from Patagonia includes the most complete and luxurious facilities to the popular snow parks, a cheap option for those who want to save money. There are a variety of dining options and non-skiers can also enjoy options such as snowshoeing, sledding and the personal watercraft. You don’t have to be a professional to have fun and enjoy in the mountains in Argentina.

Catedral is one of the most popular tracks for skiers. Located just 15 kilometers from Bariloche, one of the major tourist cities in the country, Catedral has 1,200 hectares to enjoy the snow. Includes fifty tracks and roads with 38 lifts. For professionals and enthusiasts tricks and freestyle, it is a perfect place to perform jumps and shows an extraordinary style.

But the province of Santa Cruz, located between Chile and the Atlantic Ocean, offers the best scenery of snow Argentina, overlooking the glaciers and the natural monument, the famous glacier Perito Moreno. Valdelén Sport Center is located in an area where the Andes lose height. It has a powder snow envied by the rest of the tracks and offers restaurants, bars and facilities.

In that region, you can also find the Calafate Montain Park, a new sports center and La Hora del Chingue, offering great help and assistance to novice skiers. Further south, there are the southernmost ski stations in the world: Cerro Castor and Glaciar Martial Francisco Jerman Club Andino, with white and placid postcard views.
