The background story

Along with her family and four others, Anne Frank took refuge from Nazi persecution in the hidden rooms of a house in Amsterdam in 1942. Betrayed by unknown informers the family was deported to the concentration camps. Anne's sister Margot died in 1945 and Anne passed away shortly afterwards. Only their father Otto Frank survived the camps and it was he who fought against the demolition of the house. After the war Anne's diary was discovered and it was first published in 1947. Anne Frank House museum opened in 1960.

Walking through the historic museum

The permanent exhibition recounts the horrors of the Holocaust and visitors are humbled as they pass through a door concealed by a bookcase and enter the family's hiding place. The decor has been preserved just as it was in 1944 including the photos that Anne had pinned to the wall of her room.

Practical tips

The Anne Frank House can get busy during the summer so it's best to visit in the evening before the museum closes. Booking tickets in advance online is also a good idea. The visit takes about an hour and photography is strictly forbidden. You can buy a copy of the Diary of Anne Frank from the bookshop on your way out. The Anne Frank House is a 15 minute walk from Central Station and other popular attractions lie in close proximity. Make the most of this unforgettable experience in Amsterdam.
