Amsterdam’s culture after dusk

Meandering canals for a charming evening stroll, music and dance to captivate your eyes and ears, and a winter light show by boat. Amsterdam knows how to end your day with style.

Experiencing the cultural side of Amsterdam during the day is likely to involve a trip to the wonderful Rembrandt House Museum, just a few minutes walk from our Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam hotel. But as the sun sets and the street lamps flicker on, let’s consider what other delights there are to quench your thirst for enlightenment.

International music and dance

It’s a question I’m asked a lot and I’m convinced that the evening plan is the most challenging in which to give recommendations, as everyone has their own view on the how to make the most of the end of the day. Based on my own preferences I’d have to point you in the direction of the Dutch National Opera and Ballet, a modern setting for the most innovative of act. A quick skip across the width of three canals from the hotel will have you at their magnificent arena ahead of witnessing some spectacular performances inside.

My other top proposal is Concertgebouw, the royal concert hall. It all started for this venue near the end of the 19th century and since then they have been wowing crowds with solo pianists, jazz quartets and regular appearances from The Netherlands Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras amongst many others. For that added sense of completion to this experience, my tip is to take one of the guided tours of this foremost building during the lighter hours of the day.

Both the National Operaand Ballet and the Concertgebouw are places in which the language you speak becomes unimportant, as the music and dance prove to be a common denominator for all. It gives the guest the opportunity to enjoy a high level of entertainment without any restrictions.

Winter wonder lights

If you happen to be staying with us over the festive season then you should definitely ensure you see the annual Amsterdam Light Festival, running from the start of December through to almost the end of January. And from someone who knows the city, believe me when I say that this experience becomes even more extraordinary by boat along one of the nearby canals.

And speaking of canals, the capital of the Netherlands is famed for its winding waterways, and so why not finish off any evening with a memorable stroll along the side of the canal belt that lines your journey back to the hotel. It dates back to the 17th century and has sat on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 2010. A beautiful way to complete your cultural night in Amsterdam.
