Eating like a pro in Amsterdam

Fancy a tower-top dining experience with an Amsterdam panorama? What about picking your perfect seafood dish from the “fish theater”? No matter what your taste buds tell you to do, the Dutch capital will serve up a treat

The city of Amsterdam may not be renowned for its gastronomy in the same way that it is for canals, but for locals and those that have been before, the selection and quality of the food on offer is yet another outstanding feature of this beautiful city.

Sirloin, rib eye, T-bone or burger: meat matters

Steak. A simple request. But for anyone who has ever had a mouth-watering cut, they will know the importance of picking the right place. And Natasha in our Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam has a particular penchant for this dish and knows that Gauchos, at the Rembrandtplein, is the place to go, with a relaxed, Latin feel. Another satisfying option is housed in Black and Blue, and is the steak house that Sven, our Guest Relations Manager in Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam, frequents when top notch meat is the order of the day, although for a classic, premium burger desire to be satisfied he’d choose the award-winning Ter Marsch & Co, on Vijzelstraat. Another option for quality meat is the Cannibale Royale: that’s where Didier from the NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace would go. He says, “the burgers are rich, the steaks are tender and the American décor will keep your eyes entertained while you savor the fun atmosphere”.

Seafood and international flavors

Steaks and burgers are a common go-to choice but Amsterdam’s variety means you can always tease your taste buds no matter how long your stay. Seafood restaurants too have our managers debating which one is best. Natasha suggests Lucius on Spuistraat, where the philosohphy is delicious and nutritious, and where you’ll lick your lips just reading the menu with dishes like fillet of red perch prepared in pistachio oil with tomato puree and mushrooms, cooked to perfection. Sven on the other hand suggests the self-proclaimed “fish theater”, Pesca – a restaurant where you choose your fresh fish from a pseudo market stall, then relax, sip your beverage of choice, and await the specially prepared salmon, shellfish, tuna… whatever.

International tastes are indulged in downtown Amsterdam so, for example, if you fancy an Italian, our team suggest Casa di David sharing its dolce vita through its traditionally prepared pizzas and pastas. Maybe you’re in the mood for Spanish tapas. Enjoy the lively Catalan vibe that Tapas Bar Català has been giving off for over 20 years.

There’s no place like home – NH restaurants impress

With an unrivaled view out onto the beautiful Dam Square, our very own Grand Café Krasnapolsky, in the hotel of the same name, surrounds you with the elegance of old Parisian brasseries and offers everything from quick snacks to classical dishes and evening cocktails.

Also, in the hotel, Natasha suggests you experience the culinary delights of what is believed to be the city’s oldest restaurant, The White Room, under the watchful eye of 3-star Michelin chef Jacob Jan Boerma.

For another Michelin starred eatery, Restaurant Vermeer in NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace is highly recommended by any guest that has stepped through its doors, offering an evening of sophistication and haute cuisine.

Unique dining experiences in Amsterdam

When we asked Natasha for her thoughts on an evening meal never to be forgotten, she didn’t hesitate saying, “Moon”, and offering to arrange a table for any guest that followed her up on it. The restaurant sits at the top of the famous tower, A’Dam Toren, and not only can you savor the delicious food but also enjoy a 360-degree panorama of Amsterdam, as the restaurant revolves gently around its axis.

Panache, was the choice of Didier, and as he says, it couldn’t have been given a more appropriate name. Converted from old market storage by a group of friends, it smacks of confidence from the moment you walk in. Whether you sit and enjoy the salt-crushed bream, chow down on the exquisite lobster, or just soak up the vibrant atmosphere with a specialty cocktail, it’ll be an evening you’ll hope to repeat.
