Shop at Amsterdam's Noordermarkt for an interesting and fun experience

Noordermarkt lies in the heart of Amsterdam's atmospheric old Jordaan neighbourhood. It takes place in a beautiful square overlooking the tower of the Noorderkerk, a 15th century church

The Noordermarkt Experience

The traditional Saturday market attracts visitors from all over the Netherlands and international travellers too. Stalls sell everything from posters and paintings to records, antiques, jewellery, sunglasses, Oriental rugs and rare old books. Prices are very affordable, especially at the second-hand shops, which explains the market's popularity among university students and young travellers. The Noordemarkt takes on a festive atmosphere on Sundays and public holidays, with live bands and DJs entertaining revellers and shoppers.
Follow up a busy day's shopping by unwinding at one of the many tearooms, brasseries and traditional cafés in the vicinity. The nearby Winkel 43 serves excellent apple pie with fresh whipped cream, while the Lindengracht corner offers fresh food and drink options as well as clothes and footwear.

The Farmers' Market

By far the Noordermarkt's most popular offering is the Farmers' Market, started in 1987 by Adri Vallentin, the enterprising owner of the Winkel café. While traditional markets selling canaries and pigeons never quite took off, Vallentin's nine organic food stalls were a roaring success and became a social phenomenon in no time, attracting buyers from across the Netherlands.
So what culinary treasures are to be found here? Well, everything from mushrooms imported from Lithuania and France to homemade cakes and breads, herbs and spices, fresh fish, cured meats, eggs, oysters and honey. Find yourself a nearby park bench and dig into your bag of goodies while watching the people amble by.

The Jordaan neighbourhood's designer clothes shops, cafés, galleries and the nearby Heineken factory are worth a visit too. Getting here is easy, as the market is just 10 minutes' walk from the Westerkerk and Anne Frank House. Trams number 3 & 10 will also get you here; alight at Marnixbad.
