One Day in Amsterdam

One day in Amsterdam will never be enough, but the city's easily-accessible attractions and wide range of excellent bars and restaurants mean it’s possible to get an overview in 24 adventure-packed hours

Beginning your one day in Amsterdam

We'll get to the popular attractions in a moment, but first you need to get a sense of a typical Amsterdam day. Get things started with a hearty breakfast at the iconic Pancake Bakery. Located inside a 17th century warehouse, this spot is favoured by students and locals. Properly fuelled and energised, you’re ready to attack the day. Amsterdam is great to explore on foot but 400 km of bike lanes also make it a paradise for cycling. Grab a bike from one of the many local rental shops and it'll make getting around much easier. The city's tram service is always available if you get tired of pedalling or walking.

Amsterdam’s best attractions

One day in Amsterdam is sure to keep you busy as there’s just so much to see and do! Stick to an itinerary and it'll be possible to cover lots in a short amount of time. The Anne Frank House, where the young Jewish diarist hid during World War II, is a must for visitors to the city. Culture buffs should choose between the collections at the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk and Van Gogh Museum. They’re all excellent galleries so it’ll come down to personal preference which one wins your vote. A narrated canal cruise is an interesting way to explore Amsterdam and will also give you an insight into the city’s illustrious history.

Green spaces

You may only have one day in Amsterdam but you can’t always be on the move. Take a moment to relax and rest your weary legs in one the city’s beautiful parks. Vondelpark, which covers 110 acres, is the city’s biggest and grandest park and is great for sunbathing and picnicking. Vondelpark does accommodate 10 million visitors a year, so those after a more peaceful break from the city hubbub may wish to travel to Beatrixpark, a large, clean park mainly populated by locals. Alternatively, Keukenhof – one of the world’s largest and most colourful flower gardens – is just a short trip from Amsterdam city centre.

Take an early evening stroll

One of Amsterdam’s best features is its ambience and this is best experienced by going on a leisurely wander among the city’s canals and picturesque buildings. Even after one day in Amsterdam, you’ll really feel part of the city. Enjoy a coffee or beer outside at one of the many canalside cafés and bars. Take a walk in the famous Red Light District to witness a unique and historic aspect of Amsterdam's culture. The trade here dates back to medieval times and present-day attitudes are among the most liberal and tolerant in the world.

Amsterdam insider tips: bars and restaurants

Amsterdam’s reputation as a hedonistic wonderland isn't quite the full story. Bars here are cool and laid-back and the restaurants are downright excellent. Select from street food to high quality eateries and everything in between. If you need a guiding hand, we recommend Bord'Eau – a high-end restaurant with great views over the River Amstel – or De Reiger – a classic and stylish Amsterdam restaurant which doesn't take advance reservations.

Final moments

If you’re travelling to the airport or onwards to another city then the odds are that Amsterdam Centraal train station will be your final attraction of the day. Opened in 1889, the station functions as the hub and heart of the city and is used by some 250,000 people every single day. Jump on your train and zoom towards your next adventure. Until next time, Amsterdam.
