Sightsee & shop until you drop, Berlin has something for everyone

Due to our unique location in the heart of the Berlin City Center, you’re only a 15min walk from the Mall of Berlin Shopping Mall. Combine this shopping expedition with some great Sightseeing. Stroll along the famous Friedrichstrasse from the old east part of Berlin. Pass through the Boulevard Unter den Linden. Take in the sights of the Gendarmenmarkt , with the Französischer Dom, considered to be the nicest place in Berlin. Here the shopping starts with several independent shops and delicious restaurants. Before reaching the mall. Be sure to visit the famous Checkpoint Charlie. Once there, the Mall of Berlin offers a great selection of well-known as well as unique brands. Most of the shops open at 10 am for the early bird and close around 8 pm for the after-work shoppers.

See Berlin’s true character

As a little insider tip I would be more than happy to recommend you the trendy area Hackescher Markt with its little backroads. Just 10 minutes walking distance from our hotel you will find special individual international and national brands from clothing to design furniture’s. I really love the Auguststrasse with its art galleries, bars & restaurants hidden in apartments and back yards – it’s great hip area with a lot of Berlin character.

Prefer what was once West Berlin? Check out the Kurfürstendamn for upscale stores and the huge KaDeWe, but don’t forget to explore the nearby backstreets such as Grolmannstrasse and Bleibtreustrasse. I really love their extraordinary little boutiques, galleries and old apartments. (it’s also a great area for re-fuelling after a tough morning of shopping)

Experiencing true Berlin cuisine

If you would like to have an authentic Berlin Lunch or Dinner it is a must for you to visit the restaurant Mutter Hoppe. The food is typically heavy, most of the dishes are with potatoes but you have a really good selection of appetizers, main courses and desserts. The restaurant is an original together with the owner and if the owner is in a good mood – you might get a couple of the apricot liqueur for free. Another option is the Savigne Platz. It’s a really charming area and there’s a great selection of restaurants for lunch, as well as evening drinks.

5 museums in one place: Museum Insel

If you would like to get concentrated charge of culture our hotel is the perfect spot to get started- just a little walk along the Spree River and you’re already at Museum Island , home to the 5 most important museums in Berlin. Be sure to read about the history of the Museum Island – it is interesting as the museums itself. By the way : what people rarely know is that the Museum Insel is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999! If you’re here on a Monday a lot of the museums are closed, but I’ll be delighted to show you which ones aren’t.

Travelling with children?

Parents, turn away now, this information is for your children’s eyes only!
Guys, let’s make exploring the city fun for you too!
You have to pull your parents into the Legoland Discovery Centre at the Potsdamer Platz in the Sony Center. You can create your own Lego creature while you are surrounded by thousands of Legos. Or you can watch the adventures of your Lego Heroes at the 3D Cinema. It is a fun spot to pass the day if it’s cold and rainy outside! After the hours of fun you need to convince your parents to get a huge ice cream at Caffé e Gelato right at the Potsdamer Platz shopping mall.

Everything is not more than a 20min walk (or stroller ride) away following the great Boulevard Unter den Linden, and heading past the Brandenburg Gate, which conveniently goes right by Madame Tussauds waxwork museums...

A part of Berlin that puts all other parts of Berlin together

I personally love to go to the flea market at the Mauerpark. It is an unique open air market with huge charisma. It is the place where all kind of different people and cultures are meet. From old household items to homemade items and used clothes to new clothes you will find everything. If you are getting hungry – don’t worry – the market offers as well an extended food market with an international food selection. You can already smell the different kind of flavours from far away. The best time is the summer time – next to household items and food you will be entertained by street artists, self-appointed artist and all kind of music.

Berlin at Night

After a long day, you may still have some energy left! I can really recommend the Friedrichstadtpalast for your night entertainment. It offers spectacular changing shows and revues, not only for the grown up. Did you know that the Friedrichstadtpalast used to be a covered market in 1868 and by 1873 it had already turned into the first building solely for entertainment as a circus?!

A day away from it all

If you have time to spend some time out of the City the Schloss Sans Souci in Potsdam is a great spot to relax and gather more cultural impressions. The Park Sans Souci in front of the castle is amazing and sets the tone for what's to come. “Sans Souci” means “without worries” and the palace for Frederik the Great was not a seat of power but more a location for relaxation. I recommend taking public transportation as it's hassle free and will get you to Potsdam Center in around 35 minutes. From there, it's a short taxi ride to Sans Souci. If the fresh air makes you hungry, the historical part of Potsdam City Center is great for lunch.

Only 30 minutes away, another option is the Lake Schlachtensee. I live near here and it is my place to relax, to recharge my battery and in summer time to get refreshed while swimming in the lake. At one end of the lake you will find a very nice restaurant:Zur Fischerhuette and Biergarten for any culinary requests.

Helpful information for getting around the city

I personally do not have a car because it is not really necessary and I do not like to look for a parking spot.
Public transportation is very convenient and you can find every kind of transportation right in front of the hotel. You can get as well daily tickets or the Berlin Welcome Card that includes all kind of public transportation, up to 50% discount for more than 200 attractions and a little tour guide book. On the weekend you can also use the public transportation all night long. For more comfort we can certainly arrange taxis or private limousine driver for you.

Guest Relations Manager at NH Collection Berlin Mitte Friedrichstrasse

My name is David Rickerson-Seidel and I have been part of the NH Hotel Group since September 2015 when the first NH Collection Hotel opened in Germany. After 16 years of hotel experience, I was offered a great chance to meet people from all over the world and each time I was able to learn from them – this is one of the reason why I love my position as a Guest Relation Manager. My daily task is to fulfil our guest’s needs before they actually asking for it. With my passion for my job it is always a great pleasure to see our guests happy and smiling before they leave the hotel and I know that we have done the job right. I always say that the only thing that a guest can’t buy and book in advance is our smiling receptionist with a warm welcoming, the friendly breakfast host who would like to know if you slept well, and our elusive room maid, who is preparing the room so that it feels like home – our employees make the difference – this is why you are not checking into your room at a terminal. Whatever you need – we are always there for you.
