Where to find the best sales in Berlin

Sales in Berlin are really something to look forward to. The German capital is already a paradise for bargain hunters, from its bustling flea and street markets to glitzy malls and specialised department stores. At the end of the summer and winter seasons, sales in Berlin offer shoppers the best chances to purchase discounted goods and find hidden treasures.
Berlin is a big city and each quarter has its own shopping area. Whether you fancy a flea market or a high-end shopping mall, Berlin is an outstanding city for shopping for cheap bargains and unique products.

Mitte

Berlin's city centre, known as Mitte, has several shopping options to suit all types of consumer. The Mall of Berlin at Leipziger Platz offers more than 270 shops, while the imposing art-deco structure of the Alexa Shopping Mall contains over 50,000 m2 of fashion and electronics outlets alongside numerous restaurants. For a break from retail therapy, why not check out the Dali exhibition at Potsdamer Platz or the LOXX Minatur Welten Berlin (a model railway depicting the city in miniature)?
Other key retail spots include the Dussmann Culture Department Store on Friedrichstraße – with its stock of luxury and upscale brands – plus more than 130 stores and restaurants in the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden. Galeries Lafayette – the famous Parisian department store – has opened a branch in Mitte stocking designer clothes and luxury French brands. For local Berlin labels and pieces from upcoming designers, head to Hackescher Markt – renowned for its small, independent shops.

Charlottenburg

The Charlottenburg district is another great stop for shopping, home to numerous big stores and malls hosting great summer and winter sales. KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) is a luxurious department store selling upscale brands at the best value. Don't miss the café on the 7th floor, which boasts excellent views of the city. The Europa-Center can be found nearby and is recognisable by the large Mercedes star on its roof. It contains more than 70 shops as well as Die Stachelschweine ("The Hedgehogs") cabaret theatre.
Another shopping area that should not be skipped is Kurfürstendamm. Considered the most chic boulevard in the city, the almost 5 km-long avenue is flanked by shops, cafés and restaurants. The side streets have many hidden treasures in the form of elegant boutiques in beautiful old buildings. For interior and home décor, Stilwerk showcases international designs and is a must-visit in Charlottenburg. Fashion-savvy men will no doubt be drawn to the Porsche Design Store, which specialises in elegant, branded accessories.

Flea markets

Interesting flea markets include the weekend Art Market at Zeughaus, where art pieces are sold at reasonable prices. On Museum Island, the flea market at Bode Museum offers a plethora of antiques and books and should not be missed. Boxhagener Platz comes alive on Sundays, when an open market is set up. Many vendors come together to sell second-hand vinyl records, handbags, furniture, paintings and all sorts of other stuff. Food and drinks are also sold on the spot, providing a welcome break for tired shoppers and browsers in need of refreshment.

Valuable tips

Business hours at large stores are typically from 10:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday. Under German law, shops are only allowed to trade on 8 Sundays per year, from 13:00 to 18:00.

Guest Relations Manager at NH Collection Berlin Mitte Friedrichstrasse

My name is David Rickerson-Seidel and I have been part of the NH Hotel Group since September 2015 when the first NH Collection Hotel opened in Germany. After 16 years of hotel experience, I was offered a great chance to meet people from all over the world and each time I was able to learn from them – this is one of the reason why I love my position as a Guest Relation Manager. My daily task is to fulfil our guest’s needs before they actually asking for it. With my passion for my job it is always a great pleasure to see our guests happy and smiling before they leave the hotel and I know that we have done the job right. I always say that the only thing that a guest can’t buy and book in advance is our smiling receptionist with a warm welcoming, the friendly breakfast host who would like to know if you slept well, and our elusive room maid, who is preparing the room so that it feels like home – our employees make the difference – this is why you are not checking into your room at a terminal. Whatever you need – we are always there for you.
