Berlin opens its doors for shopping escapism

Shopping malls stocked with all the brand names to hidden back streets full of surprises, all wrapped around Berlin’s historical center.

Although Berlin may be better known around the world as a city of great historical significance, Germany’s capital offers up an impressive shopping escape and any visitor to our NH Collection Berlin Mitte Friedrichstrasse does not have to go far to experience it.

Brand variety at the Mall of Berlin

Due to our prominent location in the heart of downtown Berlin you’re just a 15-minute walk from the LP12 Mall of Berlin, and the journey gives you some additional sightseeing time too. As you stroll along the famous Friedrichstrasse from the old east part of Berlin, you’ll pass by the lime tree-lined Boulevard Unter den Linden, and then onto the Gendarmenmarkt, regarded by many as the nicest square in Berlin with the architecture of the church, Französischer Dom, just waiting to be admired. (At Christmas it’s also home to a festive market and an ice-rink!) If time is not an issue, you can get a flavor for the city’s shops en route to the mall and there are some excellent restaurants along the walk, as well as getting a chance to see Checkpoint Charlie just a little further down the road.
Once at the Mall of Berlin lose yourself throughout its four floors in the wide selection of internationally renowned brand names as well as several local designer labels. As you may expect from a modern mall, free Wi-Fi, tasty and varied food stops, children’s entertainment and tax-free shopping all come as part of the package

Shopping in Kurfuerstendamm and its grandiose Store KaDeWe:

To discover more of Berlin’s old west part, I’d highly recommend you visit the Kurfuerstendamm, likened to the Champs-Élysées in Paris, and lined with luxury boutiques such as Hugo Boss, Louis Vuitton, Valentino and Chanel. Once you’ve mingled with some of the top names in world fashion pop into the KaDeWe, the nation’s leading department store, where you will delight at the international food floor on the top of the mall.

One of the hidden extras of this neighborhood is the collection of back streets that include Grolmannstrasse and Bleibtreustrasse that take you up to Savigne Platz. I really love the extraordinary little boutiques, unusual galleries and interesting old apartments that are dotted around there. The wonderful charm of Savigne Platz can also be appreciated while lunching at one of its delightful restaurants.

Trendy shopping in Hackischer Markt

Arguably my favorite insider tip for guests looking for a special Berlin shopping experience is the trendy area of Hackischer Markt. It’s only 10 minutes from our hotel and as well as the main square that is a hub for city life, it is filled with small streets and alleyways just waiting to surprise you.
From creative clothing, both locally and internationally produced, to designer furniture that can’t help but catch the eye as you pass, a window-shopping adventure by itself is enough to pleasantly fill up a few hours. I also really love the Auguststrasse with its art galleries, bars and restaurants expectantly hidden within apartments and back yards. It really is a great hip area where you can feel a lot of Berlin’s lesser-known character.
I hope I’ve managed to give you a flavor for some of the shopping alternatives available to you near the NH Collection Berlin Mitte Friedrichstrasse hotel and I’m ready and waiting to give you an even more personalized selection the next time you visit us.

Guest Relations Manager at NH Collection Berlin Mitte Friedrichstrasse

My name is David Rickerson-Seidel and I have been part of the NH Hotel Group since September 2015 when the first NH Collection Hotel opened in Germany. After 16 years of hotel experience, I was offered a great chance to meet people from all over the world and each time I was able to learn from them – this is one of the reason why I love my position as a Guest Relation Manager. My daily task is to fulfil our guest’s needs before they actually asking for it. With my passion for my job it is always a great pleasure to see our guests happy and smiling before they leave the hotel and I know that we have done the job right. I always say that the only thing that a guest can’t buy and book in advance is our smiling receptionist with a warm welcoming, the friendly breakfast host who would like to know if you slept well, and our elusive room maid, who is preparing the room so that it feels like home – our employees make the difference – this is why you are not checking into your room at a terminal. Whatever you need – we are always there for you.
