Children can’t help but enjoy Hamburg

If visiting Germany’s second city with younger family you’ll be delighted to know that there is no chance of them being bored, and you’ll get to enjoy it all too

Whatever time of year you visit Hamburg you can be sure that younger members of the family joining you will have plenty to choose from, allowing them to take home just as positive memories of the city as you.

Miniature world, enormous fun

One place that should not be missed if youthful enthusiasm needs fueled is the incredible world of Miniatur Wunderland. You’ll find it in the Hamburg Speicherstadt (a 30-minute walk from the hotel or half that by public transport) and can enjoy seeing the children’s eyes light up when they catch a glimpse of the largest model railway system in the world – it says so in the Guinness Book! The ‘wonderland’ lives up to its name and as part of its many interactive activities children can act as fire marshals, monitor a space station and even get involved in the workings of a chocolate factory, treats included. Think of all the good elements of our big world divided into fun-sized chunks and you can imagine the delights that await those little hands.

Bears, crocodiles and feeding the elephants

Another winner with kids is the Tierpark Hagenbeck, an animal and botanical experience they are unlikely to forget. Full of impressive varieties of plants, flowers, shrubbery and trees, this 19-hectare park was the first zoo in the world to use open enclosures instead of cages and it should keep the whole family enchanted for quite some time. Pony rides, petting areas and the Tropical World Adventure Aquarium are just a taste of the attractions offered. As you wander around you’ll be able to take in some wonderful panoramas and there are also several cultural buildings to explore in this century-old adventure playground but, as you can imagine, the animals steal the show. Your best option to get there from the hotel is to take the frequent subway, which gives young minds around 20 minutes to build their anticipation.

Mini-golf, pottery and a Japanese light show

Talking of fun parks, just a 10-minute walk from the NH Collection Hamburg City is a park brimming with child-friendly entertainment, Planten un Blomen. This 45-hectare paradise gives your young ones a myriad of choices to jump between throughout a morning or afternoon. They can start with the various playgrounds available and, for those of a certain age, there is a puppet theater to amuse and distract. Creative minds can get involved in pottery workshops and for some affable family competition you can get the putters out for a round of mini-golf. There are even some water attractions for when the weather permits.
It’s worth noting that during the summer months the park plays host to a magnificent Japanese garden, generally accepted as the biggest in Europe. My favorite aspect of this is getting a good position to see the light show over the park’s lake, which has locals and tourists alike transfixed every evening. During the winter season, the park offers everyone the chance to skate, and occasionally fall, on a huge ice-rink.

Swimming with the dinosaurs

The ideas above will certainly tire out little legs but for an alternative entertainment source you can try Festland, a gigantic area boasting four swimming pools. Each pool has its own theme but for children it has to be the dinosaur one, which caters for the very young to the more adventurous. As well as plentiful space to splash around, being surrounded by prehistoric creatures gives the whole experience an added zest, especially as the models spray water out of their mouths at certain areas of the pool. The waterfall entrance to the cave is pretty special too.

An incredible island adventure

If your children are keen for an adventure then quite possibly a city escape to Helgoland is going to make their stay complete. This unique experience will involve an exhilarating journey in either a catamaran or a bi-plane – just think of the reaction when you tell them that! And then once you get to Germany’s only deep-sea island you get the opportunity to explore all that it has to offer, including its bracing North Sea air.
The city of Hamburg may not have been originally designed with children in mind, but its modern version provides fun and interest for all the family to enjoy together whether visiting for a single day or for weekly return trips. Boredom is not something you’ll easily find!
