For travellers dedicated to the mall scene, Hamburg will spoil you for choice. The heart of the city bustles with designer stores vying for the attention of international clientele. There are several big and small shopping centers, all with landscaped passages that combine the best of entertainment, shopping and dining. These feature both global luxury brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton along with top international chains, such as Adidas, Fossil and cosmetics favourite, MAC. Among these well-known names, of course, shoppers will find independent German boutiques and the city's signature department store, Alsterhaus.
The main pilgrimage for mall devotees is the Europa Passage, the city's largest inner-city mall and an architectural marvel, built to feel like a cruise ship. This spectacular retail sanctuary sprawls over five floors, housing 120 shops offering everything from luxury fashion to grand pianos.
After several months of renovations in 2010, Hamburger Meile is another happening mall for shopping in Hamburg. Containing more than 150 shops, the mall was designed to be an ideal place to hang out, dine and people-watch. The Mundsburg Center is connected to this mall via the first floor, and offers entertainment and recreation options, including a cinema, sauna, swimming pool and sports centre.

Street shopping in Hamburg

If you would like to hit Hamburg stores on the street rather than in the local malls, your first stop should surely be Mönckebergstraße. Hamburg's answer to New York's Fifth Avenue, the city's oldest, most traditional shopping street boasts luxury outlets and high street fashion alike, from Jungfernstieg to the Neuer Wall.
On Jungfernstieg, be sure to stop by the legendary Alsterhaus. This traditional department store is a chic, one-stop-shop for luxury clothing, jewellery, and home furnishings. For more classic Hamburg retail, just near Jungfernstieg, you will discover a row of merchants’ houses that have been in business here since the 1920s.
For trendy clothing and accessory shopping in Hamburg, Eppendorf is the place to go. The area offers miles of stores for clothing, shoes, home decor and housewares. The quaint cafés in between offer a pleasant way to take a break. TheSchanze district, meanwhile, has become known for its funky, cool fashion and home accessories, and the area is equally bustling with small restaurants and bars.
