Exploring the Historic Attractions
One of the most popular attractions in Madrid is the Plaza Mayor. The bustling square is a treasure trove of history and culture as well as a great spot for basking in the afternoon sun while people watching. Children will enjoy running around in the open space while you take it all in and capture some moments on camera.
The Museo del Prado is Spain's national art museum and exhibits an enviable collection of works, including masterpieces by Spanish artists such as Francisco de Goya and Velázquez. The museum is a great place to initiate a love for art in little ones, and a specially created children's audio guide is a particularly nice touch. Full price entry is €15, whilst those under 18 enter for free. Parents with young ones can have peace of mind, knowing that baby strollers can be borrowed free of charge from the cloakroom and changing facilities are located throughout the museum.
The Royal Palace of Madrid is another must-visit. Once the residence of the royal family of Spain, the Palace is now open to visitors, with the exception of formal state occasions. You can stroll around the immaculate gardens that boast a fine array of fountains and statues. Among the several rooms open to the public are the former living quarters of the King and Queen. Children and adults alike will be drawn in by the sumptuous decors and fascinating history on display. Admission is €13 for adults, €6 for children between the ages of 5 and 16 and free for the under 5s.
A short walk from the Royal Palace is the beautiful Plaza de España. An impressive array of statues, including a monument to the celebrated Spanish author, Miguel de Cervantes, make this well worth visiting. Architecture fans will also be drawn in by the surrounding architecture, including two of Madrid's tallest skyscrapers, and the archetypical art nouveau House of Gallardo.
The Madrid Railway Museum, Museo Ferrocarril, is a favourite with kids. Here, they can learn about the evolution of Spanish railroads over the years as well as explore the models of various trains. There are regular organised activities aimed at children, ensuring they will be kept amused while learning. Adults have not been left out though, as concerts and theatre performances are scheduled throughout the year. Admission is €6, €4 for children aged between 4 and 12 and free for the under 4s. The museum is open everday except Monday.
