Milanese shops are made to measure

Boutiques along narrow, winding streets; top end designers flaunting their latest creations; modern fashion outlets for everyone…Milan has it all and much, much more

The NH Concierge’s Tips

Milan, along with the likes of London, Paris and New York, is one of the fashion and design hubs of the world. And with an annual fashion week devoted entirely to Italy’s second city, it’s only right that you know what options are available to you when you hit the streets.

Luxurious fashion in Milan

As soon as you step out of our NH Collection Milano President hotel, located as it is in the very heart of Milan, my advice would be for you to head north straight towards Via Montenapoleone. In less than 10 minutes by foot you’ll be surrounded by an air of sophistication in arguably Milan’s most elegant street, while having the opportunity to admire Italian and international designers alike. You are now in Milan’s Quadrilatero d’Oro, the Golden Rectangle, and have a chance to try out some of the hottest trends from Gucci and Valentino or invest in some luxury leather items from Salvatore Ferragamo or Fendi. Window-shopping is also allowed.

Made in Italy for you to buy

After you’ve had your fill of the highest of high-end shops, why not drift a little further in a northerly direction, through some equally intriguing narrow streets, into the district of Brera. Here you’ll find a plethora of quaint boutiques founded and run by locals. That ‘Made in Italy’ tag will have a whole new sense of uniqueness if you pick up a new fashion accessory in somewhere like the very cool Clan Upstairs, or possibly a souvenir from one of the bric-a-brac and antiques stores that are dotted around. Something always grabs my attention when I least expect it.

It’s worth noting that this area, which has Milan’s academy as a center point, is generously stocked with cafés, bars and restaurants for when you need to take the weight off your legs…and possibly your arms. Fioraio Bianchi is a favourite of mine for a tasty aperitivo before lunch. Oh, and if you get a chance, pop into Foscarini Spazio Brera just to see a wonderful example of lighting design.

High street shopping, Milan style

Working your way a little east, crossing the exquisite Porta Venezia gardens, you’ll hit the very popular Corso Buenos Aires, lined with mainstream shops along both sides. It’s bustling with locals and tourists alike throughout the year and takes on a whole new appeal in the summer and festive months when the discount signs grab your attention from the displays behind the large glass windows. If you weren’t able to pick something up in the previous neighborhoods you can be sure to find something here. Well over 300 vendors will be keen to make your acquaintance and, believe it or not, you’ll generally get better attention from them if you look the part.
What a way to spend a day, or maybe a few hours between other appointments on your next stay in Italy’s glorious city of Milan.
