Rome: More than its History

Rome may be famous for its history but make no mistake this is not a city which rests on its laurels. Today, it is a cosmopolitan metropolis which is home to both ancient ruins and a vibrant contemporary culture. With art galleries, trendy bars and shops selling the latest fashions, modern Rome shows that the city is much more than its past.

Modern art in modern Rome

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, known as MACRO, is spread over two locations in the city. One is located on Via Nizza and the other in Testaccio, in the urban edge of the city. This progressive art gallery houses works by some of the best Italian artists from 1960 onwards, including pieces by Carla Accardi, Pino Pascali and Mario Schifano. The nearest metro station to the Testaccio location is Piramide and if you visit this location make sure you make a detour via the local food market which is one of the best in Rome and offers a glimpse into the thriving street life of modern Rome. The nearest metro to the Via Nizza site is Policlinico but since it is so centrally located you may wish to walk there and take in the other attractions in the area.
The other art gallery that exemplifies modern Rome is the MAXXI Museum. Opened in 2010, this national museum is the first dedicated solely to contemporary art. It covers a large space and is best understood as multiple museums operating under one name. One section is dedicated to modern art and features work by William Kentridge, Kara Walker, Gilbert and George and Alighiero Boetti among many others. The other space is dedicated to design and architecture and its modern premises was designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid. The MAXXI Museum is located in the Flaminio neighbourhood which easily reached from the city centre.

Rome architecture

The city’s most famous structures may be those that lie in ruins but modern Rome is slowly infusing the city with forward thinking, modern designs. One of the best examples of these is Richard Meier’s Jubilee Church, a Roman Catholic church located in the Tor Tre Treste neighbourhood of the city. Completed in 2003, this striking building took 7 years to build and was conceived as a way to infuse energy into the neighbourhood in the new millennium. The pure white, shell design is one of the most impressive modern church buildings to be found in Europe and it is well worth a visit. The nearest metro station is Mirti.
One of the world’s most visited music centres, the ‘Auditorium Parco della Musica’ opened in 2002 and has gone from strength to strength. This large space features multiple concert halls, which combined can seat 4500 people. There is also an open air theatre at the venue which is used for plays. In many ways this is the building that best represents modern Rome. A stunning contemporary structure where visitors can enjoy the sophistication of old Rome, as well as see new music and performances.

Fashion in modern Rome

Milan may be regarded as the leader when it comes to Italian fashion but visitors will be surprised by just how much Rome offers young fashionistas looking for the latest trends. Modern boutiques are popping up all over the city and some have been established for so long that they are now considered institutions of Roman style. One of the best is 40gradi, the go to store for young and alternative clothing. Rosso Angelico is another good option for women looking for modern urban fashion.
