Where to Begin to Explore Years of History During Your Short Stay

Rome is a vibrant city bursting with good food, high fashion and enough history to fascinate any visitor. Despite the wealth of things to do, there are several Rome must see sites that should be checked off your list no matter what the length of your stay in the Italian capital is. Luckily, the city's highlights are easily accessible on foot from Termini station, the city’s main rail station.

Roman Times: The Colosseum and the Forum Romanum

Perhaps one of the most iconic images of Rome is the picture of the massive Colosseum, with the ruins of the Forum Romanum in the foreground. Once the heart of the Roman Empire, the Forum Romanum is a large area comprising the remains of some of its most important buildings. Many of the remains are still in excellent condition and allow visitors to get a sense of what life was like in the city during the time of the Romans. There is perhaps no better way to explore Roman history than with a visit to the adjacent Colosseum. The Colosseum was the entertainment amphitheatre for the city, the largest of this particular kind of structure to be built by the Romans.
Both sites are easily accessible from the city center on foot, and visitors have the option to tour them independently, with a guide, or audio guide. Tickets can be purchased in advance, a wise idea for maximising time in the city. The sites convenient locations next to each other makes it easy to strategically combine a joint visit into one day or half-day.

Exploring Vatican City

No visit to Rome is complete without a visit to the heart of the Roman Catholic Church, Vatican City. This city-state within Rome is a must see, completely surrounded by Rome itself. Home of the Pope, the Vatican houses famous museums, which are impressive not only for the treasures that they contain from around the world but for their splendid architecture. Don't forget to look up, in order to enjoy the fantastic frescoes. The splendour of the Sistine Chapel is probably the most famous highlight, where visitors marvel at the beauty and scale of Michelangelo’s iconic ceiling fresco. St. Peter's Basilica is the other most famous site within the Vatican, renowned for its work by Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bernini.
Located in the centre of Rome, Vatican City is easily accessed on foot from other top destinations within the city itself. Entry to the museums and Sistine Chapel can also be purchased online ahead of time to save waiting in line during your stay.

The Grand Splendours of the Villa Borghese

A final Rome must see for any visitor are the incredible gardens and grounds of the Villa Borgese, which can also be spelt as Villa Borghese. The former villa was designed by the architect Flaminio Ponzio in the early 1600s. Today the grounds are a large public park and serve as an ideal setting for a picnic lunch and spot to enjoy typically sunny Roman weather. The villa itself and the lovely art gallery it houses can be accessed for a fee (€17 for adults).
This Rome must see is easily accessed by public transportation from nearby Barberini Metro station.
