The most popular teams in the sport venues of Rome

When it comes to Italian football, there are no larger teams than A.S. Roma and S.S. Lazio Roma. These rival teams share the Rome Olympic Stadium as their home pitch and have been providing this part of Italy with thrilling matches for decades. Many visitors to Rome choose to attend matches of either or both of these teams due to the jovial atmosphere and the thrill of attending a match in the largest stadium in Italy.
A.S. Roma, which you may hear referred to by locals simply as ‘Roma,’ was founded in 1927 and have since played in the top tier of Italian and European football with teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich. It was founded as a merger between existing teams at the time, with the idea that the club would become a viable rival to the much stronger northern Italian teams. It has succeeded in that goal and is today considered one of the Seven Sisters of Italian football clubs, known for winning titles and series throughout the country and Europe.
Their rival team is S.S. Lazio, part of the larger Lazio sports club founded in 1900. Like A.S. Roma, they have spent the majority of their existence in the top tier of football clubs in Italy. The club has been the champion of Italian football two times and have won the Coppa Italia six times. Their kit colours are white and sky blue and are a tribute to Rome’s ancient history and tradition.

Key sport venues in Rome

As previously mentioned both A.S. Roma and S.S. Lazio play their home matches at the Stadio Olimpico, which has a capacity of around 72,000 seats. The Stadio Olimpico is part of the Foro Italico which was constructed under the regime of Italian dictator Mussolini in the 1930s and originally named after him. The complex was completed following the Second World War and was inspired by the Roman Forum. The Foro Italico and its Stadio Olimpico were home to the 1960 Olympic Summer Games in Rome.
The Foro Italico and Stadio Olimpico are easily reached from central Rome for those attending sporting events and football matches during their stay in the city. Visitors are advised to take tram No. 2 to its terminal stop at Piazza Mancini, which is located within easy walking distance of the stadium.

Annual sporting events in Rome

In addition to its exciting football scene, Rome also is home to several annual sporting events not to be missed.
The Rome Marathon is a thrill for both participants and spectators. The race takes place each year and has become one of Europe’s most popular marathons due to the picturesque scenery, with the race forming a loop from the towering Coliseum and passing by famous Roman landmarks including the Trevi Fountain and the Piazza di Spagna.
Another famous Italian race is the 1000 Miglia. Started as a open road endurance race for sports cars, the event took place in its original format between 1927 and 1957. Since 1977 the road race is limited to vintage automobiles manufactured prior to 1957. The route follows the stunning road from Brescia to Rome.
Rome is also home to one of the most important events in the tennis season, the Internazionali d’Italia. It is known as one of the most prestigious red clay tennis tournaments in the world and attracts the top ranked players from around the globe.

If you get tired of all that sport, do not miss out other cultural events in Rome such as the classic theatres or the shopping areas to make your italian experience complete.
