Under the radar must dos in Rome

The Italian capital is known for many sights but we share some of those lesser-known but not-to-be-missed experiences

The NH Concierge’s Tips

As one of the most iconic cities of the world Rome is abundant with historical monuments and buildings but we want to share with you the must-do experiences that are not as readily known.

Roman sunset in style

The Villa Borghese Park is full of wonderful surprises to keep you occupied throughout the day – the museums and zoo included - but the Terraza del Pincio within the park is where you can enjoy a glass of full-bodied chianti while lapping up the breathtaking views across the ancient city. Aim to be there for sunset, simply stunning.

Regional tastes run in the family

If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Italian food you’re in for a treat when you order at Ristorante Peppone, on Via Emilia. It’s been in existence since the late 19th century and has stayed in the family with founder Giuseppe Tozzi’s great-grandchildren now running the business. Traditional dishes from the region are their specialty so take your pick from anything on the menu and you’ll not be disappointed.

Roman culture with a difference

If you’ve already seen the world-famous sights then two more that are often further down the list but certainly worthy of a visit are the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma and Museo e Cripta dei Frati Cappuccini. MACRO, as the first of these is locally known, is a daring, modern art museum and is made more memorable by the fact it’s set in a reconverted Peroni beer plant. The crypt on the other hand gives a more macabre view of Roman history as you’re taken beneath the church, revealing over 4,000 skeletons of Capuchin friars.

Basilica through the keyhole

A secret experience to many that isn’t found in your average tourist guide is simply a view of the Basilica di San Pietro, but what a view it is. First you have to locate the keyhole within the Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta and then as you gaze through you’ll see the striking building with rows of garden trees creating a perfect, natural frame. Your camera won’t do it justice but your memories will.

Not only the Coliseum, Pantheon and Trevi
