Amsterdam: the Dutch capital full of delights

Whether you want to get inside the mind of Van Gogh or just float along the network of seventeenth century canals, Amsterdam will live in your memory long after you leave

A stay at our Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam is an Amsterdam adventure based at its very heart. As you step out of our doorway into the bustling Dam Square I suggest you just follow your instincts as Amsterdam’s history surrounds you. Take a stroll down any of the delightful streets and marvel at the beautiful canals. Being in the center means that most places of interest are within walking distance but we also have a convenient and fun tram service to help you get around, with around 500 stops throughout the city. Ask in the hotel for one of our easy-to-follow maps.

Shopping treats whatever your budget

Downtown Amsterdam has everything required for the avid shopper. There are two long shopping streets, the Kalverstraat and the Nieuwendijk, which are the most well known and host the likes of Zara, H&M, Forever 21 and a recently opened Primark! If, however, you are looking for something a little more authentic, we have De Negen Straatjes (literally, nine streets). Here you can find local merchants in quaint boutiques with their own unique products. For more upmarket brand names, including Louis Vuitton and Hermes, head to De Bijenkorf (Beehive), a huge shopping mall at the Dam square, or try PC Hooftstraat, which has been labeled the Rodeo Drive of Amsterdam.

Eating in style without going far including the oldest White Room

With so many restaurants to choose from it can be difficult to decide. I’m very partial to a good steak so if you’re of a similar mindset then I’d point you in the direction of Gauchos at the Rembrandtplein. For a taste of Italy, Casa di David is as good as it gets and for seafood it just has to be a visit to Lucius on Spuistraat.

As a really special treat, let us arrange a table for you in the Amsterdam tower, known as the A’Dam Toren, for you to enjoy an evening meal in Moon. Here you savor not only your food but also a 360-degree panorama of Amsterdam in the comfort of a revolving restaurant. The sunset view from here will not be forgotten quickly.

Must-see museums of Van Gogh and Anne Frank

When it comes to museums our most famous are those of Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh, both in the same neighborhood and very much worth a visit. The House of Anne Frank is another that I’d always recommend as, even though many people are familiar with her story, the impressive tour appropriately reveals some hidden secrets.

From parks to dungeons: plenty to do in Amsterdam

For some down time or a relaxing walk, join the locals in Vondelpark where, if the sun is shining, you’ll find roller-skaters showing off their moves, families and friends gathered around barbecues, and couples taking a romantic stroll. It’s much quieter there during the winter months but still an escape from the pace of the city.

More active fun – for all the family – can be had in our version of Madame Tussauds, where you can meet your favorite celebrity in wax form. And for brave souls, why not pop down Rokin to the Amsterdam dungeons for a creepy thrill that takes you through 500 years of its dark history. A less scary way to learn is within our Nemo Science Museum, with myriad machines, experiments and secrets that will amaze young and old.

Clubs, musicals, cinema: you choose your nightlife

After a day’s adventure within the city you may be thinking about what to do when the sun is long gone and Amsterdam does not disappoint. If you like clubbing you will find several distinct options on the Leidsesquare and Rembrandtsquare. These squares are also home to some cinemas if a film is your way to unwind. Both our city and The Hague, our political capital city about an hour away, have a splendid selection of musical shows, which we’d be happy to organize for you upon arrival.

Short-stay, long-stay

If time is limited then let me recommend a simple 1,2,3 experience to ensure that you leave satisfied. First, book a boat trip along our canals, a memorable way to explore the city. Next, jump off the tour close to the Bijenkorf department store and pick up all sorts of items to take home. Finish this off with a delicious, yet light, dinner at our very own Grand Café Krasnapolsky.

For those seeking more than just an Amsterdam visit then why not dress like a typical ‘Volendammer’, clogs and all, during a day trip to the small town of Volendam, less than 30 minutes north of our city. It’s very much a fishing town with small boats in the harbor and characteristic wooden houses that you won’t find anywhere else. A real joy to see.
