Eixample: New Barcelona

Eixample is noted for being one of Barcelona’s trendiest neighbourhoods. Translated as ‘Expansion’, Eixample is a relatively new area of the city, having been developed in the late 19th and early 20th century. Today, the area is a trove of high end shops and restaurants, art galleries, and modern architecture. This part of town doesn’t exhibit the narrow, winding streets that characterize many parts of Barcelona. Instead, you’ll find an orderly, modernist grid system that mirrors the elegance and sophistication of Eixample.

What to do in Eixample

Eixample is what could be considered “the real Barcelona”. You’ll be just a short walk away from Old Town and the rest of Barcelona, all the while being in a neighborhood thriving with activity and life. The best thing to do when you first get to Eixample is to simply head out for a stroll and take in the modernist architecture, cafés, and restaurants that give the neighborhood its vibrancy. Along the way you’ll come across many of Gaudi’s masterpieces, including the La Sagrada Familia and Casa Milà, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Shopping in Eixample

The shopping in Eixample is among the best in Barcelona. If you want the very best, head to Passeig de Gracia, where you’ll find many of the finest fashion stores in the world, including Chanel, MaxMara, Tiffany’s, and Burberry, among others. There are also many independent boutiques along Rambla de Catalunya, which is similar to Passeig de Gracia but without the crowds.
