The eating delights of Frankfurt

From lounges in the sky to making sure your steak is cooked just right, Frankfurt’s eateries offer more than just a tasty experience.

As a Guest Relations Manager, I’m well accustomed to making recommendations to visitors to our Avani Frankfurt City Hotel, and take pride in knowing the right place for the needs and requests of each guest at any given time. Here are some general ideas on a few places to eat when in Frankfurt.

The ubiquitous sausage

If you’ve never been to the German city famed for its skyscrapers – hence the nickname ‘Mainhattan’ - then one of the first things you may want to try when it’s time to refuel is the sausage named after the city itself. The Frankfurter comes in various forms and since 1929 will only carry the official name Frankfurter Würstchen if it has been made in the region. As well as it being boiled to perfection, it’s the topping that adds the magic – like sliced pickle to add a crunch. Wondering what the best way to find your favorite is? Try as many as you can!

City view for a buffet lunch

A satisfyingly comfortable lunch stop is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Leonhard’s Skylounge is just past the MyZeil shopping mall and as well as having the wide selection of their buffet available, and plenty of space, you can sit back with your full plate and enjoy a view of the imposing skyline from the restaurant’s lofty position.

Tapas and cook-your-own steak

Another place I love is Buena Vista on Grosse Eschenheimer Strasse. A touch of Spain is brought to the city with its selection of delicious hot and cold tapas available to eat inside or on the terrace, weather permitting. They also give the chance to do the cooking yourself as you grill your steak at the table over a lava rock, flipping the meat back onto your plate as soon as it meets your ideal doneness.

Traditional Frankfurt food

Traditional local fare is served up at Zu den 12 Aposteln and is the place to go if you want to try Frankfurt's national green sauce dish with potatoes and 2 half-eggs. It must, of course, be washed down with our specialty, apfelwein, a very regional apple wine. (If you didn’t know, for locals this thirst-quencher is as much a tradition as beer is to Munich’s Bavarians, with festivals to match). This restaurant is just around the corner from our hotel so don’t be surprised if you see me there too enjoying their delicious Apostel schnitzel!

Dinner is an international taste affair

Evenings in Frankfurt offer you tastes of the world. Japanese, African, Italian, Thai, American, Chinese, Turkish, and more, there are always options available to suit your palate on any given day. If you have a particular desire, speak to myself of the front desk team. Not only can we point you in the right direction but we can also reserve a table for you and your party. We also suggest you give our very own The Pantry a try. Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Asian dishes are offered, along with more local cuisine.

It’s not all about meat

One thing some guests worry about when visiting Frankfurt, and Germany as a whole, is whether there are many vegetarian options, knowing that sausage and schnitzels are extremely popular. Rest assured that there are plenty of alternatives on the menu in most restaurants and there are also those places that cater solely for vegetarians and vegans. Ginkgo on Berger Strasse looks to offer something for everybody. I try to get round as many eateries as possible but also love hearing about your gastronomic experiences so please share them with me!
