1. Visit its historic downtown

The streets of the city’s historic downtown are preserved in perfect condition and offer the best way to learn about its history. The Place Richelme market is the perfect spot to sample some of the culinary delights of Provence, and the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville is ideal for relaxing with a drink in hand as you enjoy the famous Clock Tower.

2. Paul Cézanne

In addition to the architecture and charm of its streets, Aix-en-Provence is well known for having served as inspiration for the painter Paul Cézanne. Located on the city street that bears his name, the workshop of the artist associated with the post-impressionist painting movement is an essential visit if you’re an art lover.

3. La montagne Sainte Victoire

Another place you should check out if you’re interested in Cézanne is la montagne Sainte Victoire, just a half-hour drive from the city. This mountain was the subject of some of the author's most famous pictorial series. It is also the perfect place for outdoor activities during your vacation, especially if you’re into hiking and climbing.

4. International Festival of Lyric Art

Since the mid-twentieth century, the city's International Festival of Lyric Art has been held during the month of July and is one of its top tourist draws. The event features opera and classical music performed live in an outdoor setting. La Place de l'Archeveche is without a doubt the best point from which to enjoy the festival’s cultural offerings.

5. Granet Museum

Another cultural activity you can do in the city is visit the Musée Granet located in Place Saint Jean de Malte in the famous Cours Mirabeau. The collection features several hundred works by some of the most famous painters of the last centuries, such as Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso.
