Milan is a city that experiences four distinct seasons. The summer months—roughly June, July, and August—are hot and sunny, and the temperatures then drop for very comfortable and pleasant autumns. Winters are chilly and make way for warm and lovely springs.
It’s not likely that you’ll experience extreme weather while in Milan: the coldest months are December and January, which typically come with average high and low temperatures of 7ºC and 2ºC. July, meanwhile, is the hottest month in Milan, with an average daily high temperature of 30ºC.
What to see in Milan
For some of the best sights in Milan, climb to the top of the impressive Milan cathedral known worldwide as the Duomo, from which you can see the snowy Alps on sunny days. The cathedral, which took almost six centuries to complete starting in 1386, is one of the largest in the world and a gorgeous display of Baroque and Renaissance architecture.
See an opera and feel like a tragic character in the La Scala Opera House, one of the most famous opera houses in the world. A museum about the theatre, the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, is located in the same building and displays iconic costumes and artefacts from past performances.
Browse through the fashionable boutiques in the Golden Rectangle, one of the most luxurious areas in Italy. Along its beautiful, cobbled streets you’ll find shops for some of the most recognized high-end fashion brands in the world.
Another stunning architectural sight in Milan is the Sforzesco Castle, a medieval fortification where you can spend an entire day getting lost in its labyrinthine structure. Built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, it is now a tourist attraction and houses a multitude of museums.
The Santa Maria delle Grazie church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was constructed back in the 15th century. It guards one of the most often reproduced artistic treasures in history, The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci.
Milan is also home to the oldest active shopping gallery in the world, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Its building is one of the most striking sights in Milan and within it you’ll find a host of high-end boutiques and restaurants
What to eat in Milan?
Milan has many attractions, and its cuisine is at the very top of them. The gastronomy of Milan includes many traditional dishes that are well-known (and imitated) worldwide, and for good reason. The most emblematic of these dishes, and one of the oldest, is perhaps the cotoletta alla Milanese, a veal cutlet breaded and fried in butter. It’s a simple yet very rich dish and trying an authentic one in Milan is quite the experience.
The minestrone Milanese is another one of the city’s renowned dishes: a hearty soup packed with in-season vegetables that is very comforting during the winter. If you’re looking for a meat dish, try the ossobuco, which is veal shank, richly braised with vegetables and broth until tender. It’s typically served with either risotto alla Milanese (a creamy rice dish with saffron) or polenta (cornmeal porridge), two other Milan staples.
If you’re looking for traditional Milanese restaurants to try these dishes, consider La Libera, which has been around for years in the Brera district in Via Palermo, Al Matarel, or Il Solferino, which has been embracing the traditional cuisine of Milan since 1909
How to arrive in Milan?

It is connected to Milan’s city center by several buses and by train, the Malpensa Express, which departs every 60 minutes every day of the week. You can also get a taxi to Milan’s city center or hire a car right at the Milan Malpensa Airport.
If you’re travelling to Milan from another city in Italy—such as Venice or Rome—the most convenient way of doing so is by train on the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane.
