The Atomium Brussels: Belgium’s most famous structure

The Atomium Brussels is one of the most famous structures in Belgium. Created for the Expo 58 World Fair by André Waterkeyn, the structure is very much a product of its time: futuristic, scientific, and just a little bit strange. It stands 102 meters tall and features steel spheres that are said resemble the unit cell of an iron crystal (magnified by 165 billion). Five of the steel balls are open to the public, as is the on-site restaurant, which is located in the highest ball and provides great views of the city as well as a delicious meal.

How to get to Atomium Brussels

The Atomium Brussels is located just a few kilometers to the north of the city center and can be accessed by car or metro. If taking the metro, you should disembark at Heysel Metro Station, which is just 500 meters from the building. Those arriving by car can use one of the many car parks in the vicinity.

What to do at Atomium Brussels

Five of the spheres are open to the public. One of these spheres houses a permanent exhibition that details the development of the building, information about Expo 1958, and the role which it played in the development of Brussels. Other spheres are reserved for temporary exhibitions while one is dedicated exclusively to children with special interactive displays and events.
