What to do in Berlin

Central Berlin is a smorgasbord of things to see, and when you stay at one of our centrally-located NH hotels, you’ll have it all within easy reach

The iconic Brandenburg Gate, an intended symbol of peace inaugurated in 1791, is one of Berlin’s most-visited tourist attractions. From here, a 10-minute walk will take you to the poignant Jewish Memorial, which is sure to leave a lasting impression, while close by you’ll also find Potsdamer Platz, where you can appreciate the views of the city from the spectacular observation deck in Panoramapunkt, which boasts Europe’s fastest elevator.

To continue your tour, take a 20-minute stroll to Gendarmenmarkt and admire the architecture of the Konzerthaus Berlin and the French and German Cathedrals which stand to either side. During the holiday period, you’ll find one of Berlin’s famous Christmas markets here too.

Finally, head to Hackesche Höfe, a restored courtyard complex bursting with independent stores, art galleries, restaurants, and nightlife hotspots. Also, if you have time, dedicate a day to Museumsinsel, a sprawling island of 5 museums filled with sculptures, paintings, and classical antiquities, where you can also take a boat ride to admire the architecture.

A taste of Berlin

Popular with locals and a must for tourists, the famous Döner kebab is a culinary experience in Berlin, where it’s said to have been created by Turkish immigrant Kadir Nurman. Whether you prefer it as a street-food snack or a sit-down meal, you’ll find this specialty – pita or flatbread filled with grilled meat, salad, and a dollop of the sauce of your choice - all over the city. Stay traditional and choose chicken or lamb with garlic, herb, or hot sauce, or head to Vöner to sample the well-known vegan version. Though the title of “Berlin’s best Döner” is hotly contested, you’ll find some of the most famous at Mustafa and K’ups.
