Valentine's Day ideas

With cool, misty winters and hot summers, Milan is attractive throughout the year. The month of February is usually a good time to visit the city and couples often choose to celebrate their Valentine’s Day in Milan. Milan Cathedral, the Teatro alla Scala and the Castello Sforzesco are must-see landmarks and photo opportunities on the itinerary. The San Siro Stadium, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Pinacoteca di Brera and Via Montenapoleone are the most frequented tourist attractions, with something to appeal to every visitor. There are countless ways to spend Valentine's Day in Milan with your partner.
Milan is one of the fashion capitals of Europe and Fashion Week events usually take place in the weeks around Valentine's Day, with additional shows held throughout the year. Women's Fashion Week is held in late February, while the men's event takes place in January. If you're looking to make a big statement by giving your lover a gift on Valentine's Day in Milan, locally-designed clothing pieces make a great, though expensive, option for fashion-savvy partners.

A romantic city break

Alternatively, couples can spend their special day in a somewhat less expensive way by indulging in more simple pleasures. Browse the great artwork displayed in Milan's museums and galleries, take evening strolls in the Brera and Navigli districts or climb up to the Duomo's roof to enjoy serenity and a gorgeous view. The Duomo di Milano, or "Milan Cathedral", is the largest Gothic cathedral and the fifth largest church in the world. It boasts 135 spires and 3200 statues and took nearly 600 years to construct. Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned King of Italy here in 1805.
After a fun day of sightseeing and exploring with your better half, retire to a quaint and romantic restaurant for dinner and drinks. There are countless great spots in central Milan to suit every taste, from the traditional Milanese trattoria of Osteria del Binari to the exotic flavours of Vietnamonamour. Le 5 Terre is renowned for its fresh and refined seafood dishes.

Venture beyond the city

An alternative to celebrating Valentine's Day in Milan city centre is to take a short trip to Lake Como, a popular rural retreat since Ancient Roman times. The third largest lake in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe, it is well known for its breathtaking scenery of deep blue waters and rugged Alpine foothills. Encircled by hills and mountains, Lake Como is close to many holiday villas and resorts offering stunning views.
The city of Como is built around a majestic cathedral which is well known for its Gothic architecture, vibrant stained glass windows and beautiful statues. Visitors can spend hours wandering the winding paths of the Giardini di Villa Melzi, a gorgeous garden that makes you feel like you are in paradise. What more could you want from a Valentine's Day excursion?
Enjoy a romantic funicular rail ride to the top of Brunate to get the most spectacular views of Como city and its lake. The Jungle Raider Park is an option for a more adventurous couple and a visit to the historic Castello di Vezio is another must – the hiking trails have very picturesque views and the castle is well worth the steep climb.
