The Seven Hills of Rome

The seven hills of Rome, namely the Aventine, the Caelian, the Capitoline, the Esquiline, the Palatine, the Quirinal, and the Viminal, lie to the east of the river Tiber within the walls of Rome. According to traditional lore, the seven hills were initially populated by small settlements that joined together as a single community to form the city of Rome. The Servian Walls were built in the early 4th century BC to protect the seven hills. There are many parks, ancient buildings and monuments on the Esquiline, Aventine, Viminal, Quirinal, and Caelian hills. Rome's city hall is on the Capitoline Hill.

The Park of Aqueducts

The park of aqueducts is one of the major green parks in Rome. A part of the Appian Way Regional Park, the Parco degli Acquedotti is named for the aqueducts that pass through it. In the 240 hectares of parkland there are remnants of seven papal Roman aqueducts that supply water to ancient Rome. This public park is connected by the subway stations Lucio Sestio and Giulio Agricola. Protected from urbanization, the Parco degli Acquedotti preserves a rustic atmosphere though it is only 8 km from the centre of Rome.

Villa Doria Pamphili Park

Villa Doria Pamphili, prominent among the green parks in Rome, is an enormous spread of rolling parkland that was once the private estate of Prince Camillo Pamphilj. The Casino del Bel Respiro, the prince’s former summer dwelling, is in the centre of the park. This magnificent baroque building is better known as the ‘Villa Algardi'. Landscaped with citrus trees and manicured gardens, it is now used for official government functions. On sunny days you’ll find plenty of locals walking, jogging, cycling, playing football or simply lounging around in the park.

The Villa Borghese

The Villa Borghese public park consists of 85 hectares of land with panoramic views of attractions such as the Vatican, the main fountains or the Popolo Square. The Villa Borghese is well known because formed a part of the Borghese Princes’ private villa. The Galleria Borghese has a priceless collection of paintings and sculptures that will delight art lovers. Families can spend the day at the Biopark, amid the vast assortment of animals and birds. The Casa del Cinema is a theatre that offers a curriculum of film screenings, film editing and direction classes. Several fountains are dotted throughout the park. Winter ice skating, rollerblading and skateboarding are popular sports in the park. There are two ‘secret gardens’ in Villa Borghese; ‘The Giardino dei melangoli’ with its lovely eagle fountain, and the ‘The Flower Garden’ which is beautifully ornamented with colourful flowers. The Piazza di Siena, the Gardens of Muro Torto and the Valley of Plain Trees are some of the other delightful spots of Villa Borghese.

The Park of the Caffarella

The Valley of the Caffarella follows the route of the river Almone through a green, mountainous landscape. Flanked by the Via Appia Antica and Via Latina, this valley borders the urbanized areas of southern Rome. The Park of the Caffarella is a protected public park. It is home to many endangered species of birds and animals. Some parts of the valley are used for agricultural tasks and sightseers here often encounter shaggy white guard dogs with their flocks of sheep. With its fresh countryside air and numerous archaeological sites, the Caffarella provides quite a thrill to its visitors. An impressive nymphaeum in the cavern where the nymph Egeria lived, venerated springs and sacred woodlands add a certain spookiness to the park. This area also has many prominent Roman tombs and villas. The Casale della Vaccareccia is a sprawling building with battlement fortifications, yawning window frames and an abandoned tower. Now a farm complex, this intriguing site still houses farm animals. The Caffarella Park is dotted with several medieval towers that served primarily as watchtowers. You can also visit the Church ofSant'Urbano alla Caffarella, a 7th century church that was built over an ancient pagan temple.
