The Seven Hills of Rome
The seven hills of Rome, namely the Aventine, the Caelian, the Capitoline, the Esquiline, the Palatine, the Quirinal, and the Viminal, lie to the east of the river Tiber within the walls of Rome. According to traditional lore, the seven hills were initially populated by small settlements that joined together as a single community to form the city of Rome. The Servian Walls were built in the early 4th century BC to protect the seven hills. There are many parks, ancient buildings and monuments on the Esquiline, Aventine, Viminal, Quirinal, and Caelian hills. Rome's city hall is on the Capitoline Hill.
