The alternative side to Amsterdam shopping

Allow our guest relations manager to take you through some of the lesser-known shopping areas of the capital of the Netherlands giving you an insight into the local designs, market atmosphere and second-hand traders.

There’s so much to do and see in Amsterdam and when it comes to shopping the main street of Kalverstraat caters for most. However, if something a little different is desired then I’d suggest you get yourself onto De Negen Straatjes, which is literally translated as 'Nine Streets'. There you’ll be surrounded by vintage shops, designer boutiques and trendy art galleries as you wander through the very center of the city’s canal district. An immediate sense of Amsterdam hits you in this neighborhood. One place in particular that I’d send you to goes by the name of 'I Love Vintage', which I pop into whenever I get a chance.

Local designers create

De Heilige Weg is another area you should search out for some authentic Dutch designers. It’s a short walk from the hotel, at the Hartenstraat, and offers you the delights of Scotch & Soda, Fabienne Chapot and Colorful Rebel among others. For more local creations, Hotel Droog is not far away on Staalstraat and even if you don’t buy anything, you’ll get wondrous ideas to take away with you. At first look, this street doesn’t appear to be anything special but give it a chance as it’s also full of cute second-hand shops and places to grab a bite to eat, including my favorite, the chocolatier Puccini. Yum!

Market stalls for all

If open-plan markets are your thing, then don’t leave without visiting the Albert Cuyp Markt, which is known to be the largest in Europe. As well as the expected bustling atmosphere and souvenir-filled stalls to immerse yourself in, there is a chance to savor some traditional raw herring, a delicacy in these parts, from one of the cafés.

When a break from mainstream shopping is desired, central Amsterdam gives you plenty of options and a guarantee of making a truly unique purchase to take home.
