So you’ve been working or sightseeing all day and you feel like finishing it off with a movie. Well, I can’t recommend the Pathé Tuschinski highly enough. Situated at the other end of the Kloveniersburgwal from the hotel, the building itself, opened in 1921, is really impressive and is a combination of Jugendstil (the name for German Art Nouveau), Art Deco and Amsterdam School Expressionism. As its new title suggests, it now belongs to the Pathé Group but still exudes all of its 1920s cachet.
An excellent choice for theatrical works is the Koninklijk Theater Carré overlooking the Amstel canal. Its golden hall provides a beautiful setting for the performances and I always get an extraordinary feeling when I sit in the hall’s rafters. Throughout the year there are all kinds of wonderful live performances, and the calendar concludes with a spectacular Christmas Circus.
Another option is the DeLaMar Theater, which offers dazzling red halls, endless foyers and exquisite salons. There are all kinds of performances and also one extra exhibition you should try to see: a unique collection of works by various influential photographers. From our NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace hotel you can reach the theater on public transport in around 20 minutes.
I must also give a mention to the lesser-known Frascati Theater, which is definitely worth a try and is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. This petite theater is situated on the narrow street of Nes, and presents more than 700 Dutch and international dance and theater productions each year. If you prefer to be surrounded by locals rather than tourists then this is for you.
An evening meal out in Amsterdam offers opportunities aplenty but my immediate choice is Panache, which sits in the neighborhood of Old West near the Ten Katemarkt. In the unique surroundings of what used to be market storage you can drink haute cocktails and enjoy a truly delectable meal. With timber walls and lighting that makes it feel like a luxury barn, it adds to the satisfaction of seeing your entrecote or lobster coming out of the kitchen. Their most famous dish is the salt-crushed bream and I can tell you from personal experience that it is one to savor. A relaxed walk there from the hotel will take around half an hour or jump on the tram and you’ll arrive in just 10 minutes.
Of course, if you want a top quality, Michelin-star experience closer to your base, then you don’t even need to leave the premises. Our very own Vermeer restaurant puts the focus on the product, with nature providing the inspirational source to the dishes presented. These are prepared in line with the rhythm of the seasons with menus switched monthly, and with the plates always created using the freshly-grown produce from our rooftop garden and from local farmers. And if you like the occasional cocktail then why not ask for one after your meal – it too gets the seasonal touch.
