The biggest city park in Amsterdam

West of the Leidseplein and Museumplein lies the beautiful Vondelpark. Firstopened to the public in 1865, this 19th century park offers a natural retreat within the city centre. The expansive Vondelpark spans 47 hectares of well-manicured greens, pathways, beautiful flower beds and grand trees. It is home to many bird species such as blue herons and wild ducks. There is an open-air theatre, six children's play areas and a large pond, making the Vondelpark ideal for solo or group recreation. An iron bandstand is used for musical concerts and numerous hotels, restaurants and cafés are in the vicinity.

What to do at Vondelpark

The Vondelpark offers visitors many possibilities. Sprawl on the grass and soak up some sunshine, rent skateboards or bicycles, stroll or jog through the park or arrange a pleasant picnic amid the verdant surroundings. In fact, a huge picnic gathering in the Vondelpark – attended by 433 participants – made it to the Guinness Book of Records in 2009. Open-air concerts liven up the atmosphere during summer, when masses gather to enjoy the free shows. Do not neglect to admire the many important statues in the Vondelpark. The imposing bronze statue of Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel, after whom the park is named, can be found on the premises. Other notable statues include The Fish by Pablo Picasso and Mama Baranka by Nelson Carrilho.

Opening times and getting here

The Vondelpark is accessible to the public 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. To reach the park from Dam Square, take tram line 1 and get off at J.P. Heijestraat. Alternatively, it is a half-hour walk from Dam Square if you fancy the fresh air. If you are near the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum then the Vondelpark is just a few minutes' walk away.
